Strawberries and sunshine BY BRANDY TODT, The ShopperJune 29, 2017 SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – The 2nd annual Strawberry Festival at Wellwood Orchards was very successful with an estimated 2500 people attending the family friendly event. Saturday, June 24 was the idyllic summer day with a warm breeze with sunny and blue sky. The 4000 pounds of strawberries sold will be eaten with shortcake, turned into jam, blended into a smoothie or savored during the winter months. While waiting in the check out line, customers were surrounded with the mouth-watering smell of Wellwood’s famous apple cider donuts being made on the other side of the store. If eating strawberries wasn’t enough, there were food vendors offering delicious lunch options of pulled pork, BBQ, mac n’ cheese, freshly squeezed lemonade, and an array of desserts. After picking strawberries, there was plenty to still see with 47 vendors selling a variety of wares including glass and wooden objects, soaps, dog treats, handbags, photographs, jewelry, pottery, cosmetics, and fiber arts. The Girl Scout troop 51500 had face painting and a make your own slime station. Suncommon was available for people to ask questions about going solar. Children had the option to paint a rock with World of Discovery and Kevlar Athletics was giving demos throughout the day. Music from The Sullivan, Davis, Hansom band started the morning followed by Ajaye Jardine All Natural Country Music, and The Welterweights featuring Kevin Ravin and Lowell Thompson finished the festival. Wellwood Orchards next large event is their 11th annual Customer Appreciation Day on September 2 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Visit wellwoodorchards.com for their schedule of events and picking seasons.
