As of 10:30 a.m., the scene was deemed stable. According to Springfield Fire Chief Russ Thompson, the incident commander, an "unidentified hazmat substance" was found on scene, and as of late Wednesday morning, state hazmat officials were called in to assist. Thompson said there was no immediate danger to the public and no injuries. Six units including fire apparatus from Springfield, Rockingham, Chester and Ascutney were on scene working in the section of the building at 252-262 River St. between Dunkin Donuts and Springfield Pharmacy. Employees of the a dental office and neighboring business within the plaza were evacuated as a precaution, and other employees at each end of the plaza were considered safe to remain inside their places of business, according to officials on scene. The state hazmat team was called because it has better telemetry to measure any possible hazardous materials, according to Thompson. The incident was still under investigation late Wednesday morning. — This story will be updated when more information is available.
