Statement from Mercy For Animals:
Last week, Vermont Packinghouse—a slaughterhouse in North Springfield that bills itself as “humane”—was suspended by the USDA again for animal cruelty. This is Vermont Packinghouse’s fifth suspension for animal cruelty since October 2016, an abysmal record matched by only three other federally inspected slaughterhouses in the past decade.
Unfortunately, the USDA quickly lifted the suspension, placing more animals in harm’s way.
Now, Mercy For Animals is calling on the USDA to shut down Vermont Packinghouse and on the Vermont Agency of Agriculture Food & Markets to charge the slaughterhouse again with violations of the state humane slaughter law. We are also urging the Vermont attorney general again to investigate the company’s deceptive advertising.
“At Vermont Packinghouse, animals have been shot in the head multiple times before losing consciousness, and despite two dozen documented violations, the abuse continues,” said Vandhana Bala, general counsel of Mercy For Animals. “It’s time for the state of Vermont and the USDA to hold Vermont Packinghouse accountable for abusing animals and deceiving consumers with ‘humane’ claims while repeatedly being shut down for inhumane practices.”
Mercy For Animals is an international non-profit animal advocacy organization dedicated to preventing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting compassionate food choices and policies.

Agency of Ag considering sanctions for North Springfield slaughterhouse Agency of Ag considering sanctions for North Springfield slaughterhouse Posted: Tue 4:28 PM, Feb 06, 2018 | Updated: Tue 6:47 PM, Feb 06, 2018 MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) The Vermont Agency of Agriculture is looking at possible sanctions against a North Springfield slaughterhouse. The USDA. shut the Vermont Packinghouse down for a short period last month -- the fifth suspension the USDA has imposed on the facility since October 2016. The temporary suspension resulted from the mishandling of a sheep slaughter, according to Vermont State Veterinarian Kristin Haas. She says the facility is federally inspected, but the state can also impose its own penalties. Haas says officials want the slaughterhouse to remain open because it is important to Vermont's farmers and food industry. "This facility provides a necessary resource for a number of farmers in the state and outside the state, too. Without this facility operating there would be a significant void in slaughtering and processing capacity," Haas said. Mercy for Animals, an international nonprofit group focused on preventing cruelty to farmed animals, is calling for the state to take action.
" animals have been shot in the head multiple times " Would it be more humane to stop after the first shot? and let the animal suffer while you apologize and lavish a dirty hog with kisses to make the pain go away?
ReplyDeleteSuck it up! it is in fact a slaughter house. not everyone is vegan I am a meat eater and I know where it comes from> Keep it coming guys!
Someone some where has it out for this business, and has someone ear at the Vt Agency of Agriculture, they are never going to let up. Yes these animals have some feelings, but have you ever watched their day to day lives, walking around in the fields, eat some hay or grass, take a big dump and head back for some more. They are on this earth for us to eat, and we has humans try to end their lives as humanly as possible, every once in a while it takes a couple shots... move on... and thanks for sacrificing your life for the humans... it's been going on for millions of years.
ReplyDeleteRoger, I mostly agree. The idea that animals are on the earth for us to eat goes into a field where I don't forage, but that doesn't detract from the rest. Humans are omnivores. We should avoid blatant cruelty, but regulated slaughter is far gentler than what happens to virtually every wild animal, where slaughter and consumption are often combined.
