Families flocked to the Crown Point Country Club all day Saturday to take part in events such as the sled race, a kayak race held later in the day, games indoors, crafts by AmeriCorps VISTA in conjunction with All-4-One, face painting, and a demonstration by Wonderle’s Big Top Adventures, among other activities. Springfield Parks and Recreation Director Andy Bladyka said on Saturday afternoon that it appeared turnout for this year’s event, the third annual, exceeded last year’s participation numbers. The winners of the Cardboard Sled Race on Saturday, Feb. 10 were three-time winner Julian Roberson with the Bling Award for his Falcon sled; Jayden Paul with the Bragging Award for his Patriots-themed sled, which traveled the farthest; and Elizabeth Warner with the Spirit Award for her pink-accented Jeep-themed sled. Other winter carnival events taking place throughout the weekend of Feb. 9-11 included broom hockey, a snowman competition, skating and sledding, live music and a bonfire, and a fireworks display. All activities were free, with support of local business sponsors. Children work at an art table set up by Americorps Vista Volunteer Kelly Burton, standing, and volunteer Megan Stagner, at right. Children had a chance to decorate cups with their own artwork, and then have a serving of hot cocoa. The table was sponsored by AmeriCorps VISTA in conjunction with All-4-One.
