SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — New assistant principal will split time between schools By KATY SAVAGE ksavage@eagletimes.com May 12, 2018 Updated 20 hrs ago 0 4 remaining of 5 Welcome! We hope that you enjoy our free content. SPRINGFIELD, Vt. —After being offered an interim principal position in Cavendish and then declining, Madeline Carlock has settled with the Springfield School District. Carlock, who is currently an instructional coach for elementary children in the Hartford School District, will be a part-time assistant at Elm Hill and Union Street schools next year. "It’s a wonderful school district,” said Carlock. “This is as close to a dream job as I could imagine.” Carlock, 32, of West Lebanon, accepted the position in Springfield after she went through six rounds of interviews to be the interim principal at Cavendish Town Elementary School. The Cavendish school board voted to hire Carlock in a 5-3 vote after a 2 ½ hour executive session on April 17, according to meeting minutes. The board approved her salary of $80,000, beginning July 1. Carlock said she declined because of the community’s lack of support. “You’re only as successful as the people around you supporting you,” said Carlock. “The community was really unhappy with the fact that it was an interim position.” Carlock graduated with a master’s degree from Southern New Hampshire University in 2014. She has experience teaching first grade through fifth grade. She also taught in Vietnam four years ago during a sabbatical. In her current role at Hartford School District, Carlock works with teachers and principals in an administrative-like role to improve education. “My heart is with curriculum development and assessment,” she said. The assistant principal is a new position in Springfield, which was created during budget session. While Carlock won’t have any disciplinary responsibilities, she’ll be involved in supporting the staff in both school buildings. advertisement “We decided as a school board to put our money into education,” said board Chairman Ed Caron, explaining administrators had requested the new role be created to offer them more support. “We’re looking forward to changes and improvements in the schools and test scores,” Caron said. Carlock was picked among 19 applicants for the assistant principal position. She was interviewed by search committee members twice. “She was very thoughtful in how she discussed the balance of supporting teachers while creating academic achievement,” said Springfield Schools Superintendent Zach McLaughlin. “We think that her skills are a natural fit for the nature of the position.” Her salary, $75,000, was also approved by the board. Carlock will work with Elm Street Principal Christine Pereira and Union Street Principal Phil Trejo, who was just hired last month.
