ReplyDeleteI've worked in mental health services. It's a psychological and emotional meat grinder. Most people can't take it for long. There was a joke where I worked: "What's the difference between the staff and the patients? The patients are getting better!" The lousy pay, the unrealistic demands placed on staff, the focus on billing instead of patient care, all contribute to a high turnover rate. People go in with the best of intentions, and burn out.
ReplyDeleteAn academic emphasis on math and science, and/or mastering a viable trade avoids being a poster child for unskilled, low wages. But at least these folks are earning a living which is far more respectable than most in this rat hole.
