Keith Stern of North Springfield, owner of Stern's Quality Produce market for the past 33 years, has something to say about the current lettuce scare.
A perfect example of government overreach is in full effect: The terrifying romaine lettuce scare. My wife saw it on the internet Thursday night warning people not to eat romaine until the source of the problem lettuce was isolated. When I went into the produce market Friday morning I found out the details. It was a problem that occurred back in October, a full three+ weeks ago with no problems occurring since.
All the romaine that has been sold recently has to be destroyed without any evidence of a problem with any of it. When a case of romaine is around $40 and romaine hearts at around $44, there are millions of dollars in losses by growers, wholesalers, retailers, restaurants, and consumers with no recourse. Yes the big supermarket chains will force the growers to absorb the losses. We will see more losses of farms and wholesalers because of the ineptitude of government.
My wife called the CDC and talked to a woman there who admitted there is no problem with the lettuce now but their attitude is better to be safe than sorry. Sorry about the farmers? Of course not, they should all be punished.
It is an annoyance but not a problem for me as much as for restaurants who have fixed menu prices and consumers. Lettuces are heading for the $60-70 range, about double, and spring mix is more than doubling in price. The growers have to make up their losses and slow sales of the supplies to avoid shortages created by the lack of romaine.

Worth Knowing: Stern's Quality Produce is NOT closing
Stern's sends trucks to Chelsea, Massachusetts several times a week to bring back fresh produce. Stern's also sells produce it can source locally or close to locally. A major reason to shop at Sterns is the prices, less than prices at other grocery outlets.

I had heard that Keith was a conspiracy theorist. I'd take the word of the CDC over his, any day. Trump's tariffs are doing more to hurt farmers and grocers than the loss of a few heads of bad lettuce. But go ahead, ignore the experts. Just don't blame the Democrats when you get sick.
ReplyDeleteHey 3:42.......you DO realize what a douche you are, right?
