The Steampunk Society of Vermont had the pleasure of hosting a few events at Carnage 21 in Killington, VT over the weekend of November 3rd and 4th. Carnage is a Vermont based table-top gaming convention which held it’s 21st event this year.
The theme of this year’s convention was space exploration and science fiction. Steampunk, being a genre of science fiction was a perfect addition to this year’s Carnage convention.
The two events hosted by the Steampunk Society of Vermont were Splendid Teapot Racing and a Steampunk/Cosplay Fashion show. For those unfamiliar with Splendid Teapot Racing, it involves converting remote control cars into mobile teapots. These teapot racers must navigate an obstacle course and are awarded points for appearance, entertainment value, bribing of the judges, speed and more. Carnage attendees enjoyed running the complicated course involving tunnels, bridges, and ramps. There were many crashes and lots of laughing. The winning racer for Best in Show was the “Tea Fighter” created by Rachel Coro, featuring weapons that fired and it’s own soundtrack pumped out from a speaker within the racer’s tea pot. Splendid Teapot Racing has been a part of the Springfield VT Steampunk Festival, next planned for September 21st and 22nd of 2019.
The Steampunk and Cosplay Fashion show featured a wide variety of costumes from time travelers, circus entertainers, gun-slingers, Ghostbusters, mad scientists, Labyrinth costumes, Grimm Fairy Tale characters, and more. Carnage attendees also participated in the fashion show, as many were in costume for the various LARPs that were held at the convention. LARP stands for Live Action Role Play, where individuals physically portray their characters in a live game, run by a gamemasters, those arranging the event and rule.
Carnage & the Steampunk Society of Vermont plan to team up again for next year’s Carnage convention. Carnage will happen shortly after the 2019 Springfield Vermont Steampunk Festival. The steampunk festival is a large fundraiser, held at the Hartness House Inn, and used to generate funds for local students studying the STEAM subjects of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. The Steampunk Society of Vermont, a non-profit organization, is currently recruiting for a 2019 festival coordinator.
