SPRINGFIELD--Ongoing construction work at Union Street School will result in a slightly longer summer vacation for its students.

Union Street will begin the 2008-2009 school year at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday Sept. 2, six days after the rest of the Springfield School District returns from summer recess.

Buildings Committee Chairman Ken Hall said that Aug. 27 is the projected completion date for Phase 1 of the Union Street addition project, but that the grounds crew will need additional time to ready the school for students and teachers.

"There's no way we could move in desks and tables and get classrooms established on time," he said.

The first phase of the renovation project has produced a new school library, computer rooms and classrooms. A complete renovation of the existing school will comprise the second phase, and is scheduled to begin the same day that classes at Union Street re-convene.

Because of the ongoing construction project, students will not be allowed on school property before 8:30 a.m. or after 3:20 p.m.
