Remembering Jack Hilliard
On Oct. 7 Springfield lost Jack Hilliard, a former teacher and coach and a mentor to the senior citizens’ program. He was 90 years old, and he died at his home.
Someone here in Vermont once said, “There is a lot to be said about the unbridled joy in what life brings,” and I would add to that what teaching and learning bring. So I am writing this to attest to that enjoyment, to salute Jack Hilliard and to thank him for the 55 years that I knew him.
Jack’s three sons, Brian, Craig and Tim wanted to respect his wishes — no ceremonies, hence, many people were unaware of his death.
So, here’s to you, Jack Hilliard, to your remarkable life. Here’s to all the young people you taught and coached. Here’s to all the joy that you brought to me and to all of us.
