Springfield Prevention Coalition sponsors video contest

“Got Dreams?” That’s the question that the town of Springfield, Vermont is asking its young adults this Spring, as they launch a town-wide video competition at SpringfieldDreams.org.

Residents who are 21 and older can enter a short video (:60 seconds or less) before April 24th and be entered to win several gift certificate prizes. All they have to do is stand in front of the camera and answer the questions: “What’s your dream and what are you doing to attain it?” There is also a People’s Choice Award to be given to the submission with the most votes by the general public. Voting is open from April 25th to May 1st, and winners will be announced May 2nd.

The Springfield Prevention Coalition is the sponsor of the project, as part of its work to encourage healthy lifestyles and educate young people about the dangers of substance abuse, including alcohol.

“We realized through our research in the community that one of the big differences between young adults who abuse alcohol and those that don’t, is that the people who are drinking socially and not binge drinking have aspirations or goals they are working towards,” said Mona Frye, Program Coordinator at the Coalition, “So we decided to focus this campaign on the positive aspects of having goals and dreams, rather than the dangers of abusing alcohol.”

Funding for the initiative comes from a Vermont Department of Health grant aimed at reducing binge drinking in young adults. Binge drinking is defined as four drinks for women, or five drinks for men, in a two-hour period.

“I used to be one of those heavy partiers,” said Kori Joyce, a 26 year old who lives in Springfield and who is one of the people who helped shape the project. “But I realized that it was just getting in the way of what I really wanted to do with my life, including running my own business.” Joyce runs his own web marketing company.

The campaign was developed by communication consultant Andrea Grayson of The Grayson Group in Charlotte, VT, with graphic design by Matt Heywood of The Image Farm from Middlebury. The website was built by Bob Morris of FYI-IT in Springfield, who is also on the Board of the Springfield Prevention Coalition.

Each person who enters a video will receive a free “Got Dreams?” T-shirt, and be entered to win the prizes. Anyone else who would like a free T-shirt can get one by contacting the Springfield Prevention Coalition. Prizes include five $50 gift certificates. The winner of the People’s Choice Award will receive an HD Flip camera.
