SPRINGFIELD — An accomplished organist returns home to play a benefit concert tonight for Tropical Storm Irene recovery efforts.
Dr. Mark Howe is the music director at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Burlington.
He has served as the music director since 1999. Howe is a Springfield native and an internationally acclaimed organist. He has performed throughout the United States, France, and Belgium and tonight, Howe will perform at the Calvary Baptist Church of Springfield. He will play a variety of English, French, and German compositions and is very much looking forward to the event.
“I got a phone call from a friend of mine Nanc Bourne who I went to Springfield High School with. She asked me if I would play and I said ‘Sure,’” Howe said. “I have a strong bond to Springfield and southern Vermont and it’s great to help out in a manner I’m suited in.”
Howe was saddened by the devastation of Tropical Storm Irene. Although Burlington experienced some difficulties, Howe said it was nothing compared to what southern Vermont experienced.
“It was not like we lost a lot of housing or buildings. We just lost power for a short time and food was destroyed at Intervale Community Farm in Burlington,” Howe said.
The concert takes place at the Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield.
The concert is set for 7 p.m. and is free to the public. Donations will be accepted and all funds will go toward southern Vermont flood relief efforts.
The Calvary Baptist Church is located at 156 Main St. in Springfield. For more information call 885-2349.
