Inmate accused of threatening Shumlin and Obama in more trouble

State police are investigating an assault that took place yesterday inside the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield.

Incident at the Southern State Correctional Facility

Springfield, VT – 04/23/12 – Today, April 23, at approximately 4:36 PM two correctional officers discovered an assault in progress inside a cell at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vermont. The correctional officers immediately intervened and secured the suspect in the assault, Dakota Gardner, age 21 of Springfield, VT.

The correctional officers and medical staff also immediately administered life saving measures to the victim, Ryan John, 19 of Springfield, VT. The victim was transported to Springfield Hospital and then airlifted to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, where he is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.

Detectives from the Vermont State Police Criminal Division responded to Southern State Correctional Facility and are currently investigating this incident. Windsor County State’s Attorney Robert Sand has been notified.

Gardner was being held at Southern State Correctional Facility for a 2009 incident of aggravated assault in Brattleboro and on federal charges for a 2012 incident of threatening the president and Governor Shumlin. John was being held at Southern State Correctional Facility on detainer for a lewd and lascivious charge out of Orleans County. Gardner remains at Southern State Correctional Facility.

No further information is available at this time. Additional updates will be issued as more information becomes available.

  1. The public would be well served for Mr. Gardner to enroll in a residential program operated by the Restorative Justice Center. As we have informed, the cost savings benefit and positive behavior support will aid in his eventual release. I'm certain he is a very good person once you get to know him.
