Springfield man denies arson

A Springfield man was arraigned on charges of arson after a Tuesday night fire on Valley Street.

CASE NUMBER: 12SF01146
DATE/TIME OF ARREST: 04-03-12 / 2144 hours
VIOLATION: 1St Degree Arson
DEFENDANT Steven Kuchta
AGE: 48
CITY, STATE OF RESIDENCE: Springfield, VT
SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: On April 3, 2012 Springfield Police and Springfield Fire personnel were called to 12 Valley Street for the report of smoke and fire in the common area of the building.
The fire was subsequently extinguished and concluded to be suspicious in nature by on scene personnel.
Steven Kuchta was believed to have potential knowledge of this incident and was later met by Springfield Police Officers at which time Kuchta provided an initial story of events surrounding his knowledge and whereabouts that night.
On April 4, 2012 Springfield Police, Vermont State Police Fire Investigative Unit and Springfield Fire again met at the scene of the fire for further investigation.
Springfield Police and VSP Fire Investigative Unit, Detectives, and through a joint effort and subsequently arrested Kuchta who had later appear before the the Vermont Superior Court, Criminal Division, Windsor District for 1St Degree Arson & VCOR [Violation Conditions of Release] 5 counts.

  1. And who can we thank for providing housing to such a wonderful person, why the now defunct/bankrupt Rockingham Area Community Land Trust, now Windsor/Windham Housing Trust, purveyor or this and other fine low income housing units in Springfield. Thank you, thank you.

  2. wasn't he also part of Turning Point? as for charges of arson and endangerment, he should be charged at the very least with attempted murder, 3 counts!

  3. why has it taken the springfield vt police department so long to pick him up
    there has been fires in the area he has lived for yrs,
    his own family has suspected him of setting fires for years
    We (his family )all hope the state of vt throws the book at him before someone gets hurt or killed!!!!!!!

  4. he has also set 2 fires in Greenville, NH when he resided in the area, one of which was major. As well as willful destruction of private property, ie vehicles, oil tanks, etc.
