SPRINGFIELD — A lucky Springfield man had a $250,000 winning ticket in last week’s $640 million Mega Millions lottery drawing.
The man, who has not been named, matched the five winning numbers but without the Mega Ball, giving him the prize of $250,000. Vermont Lottery officials confirmed that he already claimed the money.
The winner bought the ticket at Joe’s Discount Beverage in Springfield. According to owner Joe Cerniglia, the man does not play the lottery regularly and bought a $1 ticket “on a whim.”
The man returned to Joe’s Discount Beverage after hearing that it had sold a winning ticket. His life changed moments later, Cerniglia said.
“He came in and asked if the cashier could check it and then all of a sudden, bells and whistles went off. It was a winning ticket,” he said. “(The man) was surprised, almost in disbelief, and he verified it with the lottery people.”
Vermont Lottery representative Fran McAvoy said the man’s total winnings amounted to $172,500 after taxes. A federal tax claimed 25 percent (or $62,500), and the Vermont tax claimed 6 percent, or $15,000, of the winnings.
Joe’s Discount Beverage also received a 1 percent commission for selling a winning ticket. Cerniglia received $2,500 and said he would put the money back into his business.
“Lottery ticket sales were way up with the frenzy of the jackpot being so huge,” Cerniglia said. “We sold about 10 times more Mega Millions tickets than we normally do. It seemed like the day before the drawing every customer made a purchase.”
Multiple winning tickets were sold across the country, according to the Mega Millions website. The winning numbers were 2, 4, 23, 38, 46 and 23.
Three jackpot winners picked the five numbers and the Mega Ball. Those tickets were sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.
