  1. Mr. Mobus states, "There was almost no change in that rate." I am not sure how many times people have to say something to get it through the thick skulls of our town "leadership;" WE CAN NOT AFFORD ANY INCREASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yup, the grandlist has gone down. Why? Because who in their right mind would want to move here let alone stay here. I just don't understand. Every year we are told to do more with less and yet government doesn't have to. Let me remind you where the money comes from: THE TAXPAYER!!! And if we are not getting increases in our pay, we can not give it to you. I don't care if it is a difference of 2 cents. Leeches and parasites reside at town hall and the taxpayer is very tired. I think, no, I know it is time for a major overhaul in Springfield leadership. You are killing us!!! Feel good about yourselves???

    2. I have to add a special thank you to the outspoken Mcnaughton who loved to run his mouth on the blog in favor of the school budget increase touting how it wouldn't increase taxes and the school tax rate would go down...School tax portion went up...and to those of you who believe all the bull about the industry lowering taxes...the tax rate went up.

You were lied to again and again and again. What happens in this town...and you need to wrap your little heads around this fact...your neighbors who work for the town, the school, the police, the fire dept...all vote yes because they are being paid VERY well, along with Mr. Mobus, and where are they paid from....YOUR TAXES THAT WERE JUST RAISED. The school staff and school budget...they are all voting yes and talked eeryone else into voting yes so they could continue to be paid. Use your darn heads people. This is a self serving town. The grand list will continue to drop and your taxes will continue to go up until you dig your heals in, vote no across the board on every damn thing and call and bitch to your elected officials. When these idiot select board are up for re-election. Dont keep voting for them. Demand that your town officials have the same views and attitude as you.

You know...go look at the school board minutes. They cut time and so forth for the budget. Well they just gave the time back to alot of individuals in their last few meetings, they hired in people full-time again, they moved positions to administrative in order to keep their own agenda. Cut the fat while you have a chance. What you need to understand is...you won't be able to sell your house to move to get out of this mess because the more the taxes go up the more the grand list goes down and the more any real estate buyer will not want to purchase property...including yours. And in the end you lose.

    3. I didn't think anyone else noticed.... They are adding positions to the high school without blinking an eye. Where's the money coming from and why couldn't we keep the paras everyone was crying over at the elementary schools if this secret slush fund existed.

  2. Actually, anonymous 7/10/12 8:23 AM, I ALWAYS vote NO to the school budget so stop making ridiculous assumptions. If you can't add anything of substance to the conversation, say nothing at all. There is some free advice for you. You're welcome!

  3. Sorry, I misunderstood. Agreed. Everyone should vote NO but the lemmings don't and the rest of us pay the price. Sad, sad, sad.

    1. and voting no helps build the grand list how?

    2. How many more times are we going to hear that statement. Vote yes and people will come, put money in the schools and people will come. Business will flock to town, even pass on moving to China. Give, give, give and people will come. Well they came and their the head of most of those families is living on the hill next to I-91 Exit 7 (the prison for those of you that can't think). The rest are living in the Section 8 housing that the balance of us support.

I use to be annoyed with the Police in this town, not any more as I say "God Bless them now". I use to think "what a great place to live", now I think getting out of town can't happen fast enough, even if it means taking a loss on selling the house.

I love the spin on this piece. Taxes are staying the same, but some have a lower rate now so everyone else has to pay more. BS! Yeah the rate is the same but my bill just got higher! You know what that means Mr. Mobus? My taxes just got rasied! And for what?

So Alpin, if voting yes all this time as not helped build the grand list how is voting no going to hurt it? I can't afford to mow my grass but the town as three guys watch two guys mow the parks.

For one I'm tired of keeping my fingers crossed and counted on "tired" leadership in this town. Maybe it's time we had elected officals at the top level too. Hey let's elect the Town Manager Postion and the School Superintendent. Just think if they had to really report to the taxpayers!

  4. And letting the town pick our pockets clean and whiz money down the drain so that we as citizens have insufficient resources to maintain our own property values and pursue life, liberty, and happiness contributes to the grand list how? At least you got the Jack part of your name right!

  5. We all voted for this increase.

    1. Yes, evidently the majority hasn't been squeezed enough yet.

    2. because the jack wagons who voted yes for stuff work and are paid by our taxes. What does it take to get people to realize this.

You have to be pro-active and you have to volunteer to help get the high rises to vote no..to educate the both the seniors their but also the people living in section 8 and apts why it is important to vote against both the town and school budgets. Plain and simple. I wish the school and the town luck during next years vote cause i feel that they dont quite get the damage they do each time they pull shinanigans like this over on the taxpayers.

This is why your town is a dump...blame yourselves for believing these people.

    3. I didn't vote for it, I voted no.
I recall the weather was bad that day and not a lot of people were there except the school staff and a few stragglers that made their way down in the bad weather.

  6. I am sick to death of the lack of vision from Vt leadership in general. Their goofy "progressive" ideas have attracted more lowlife leaching scumbags to this state than one could ever have imagined. Their 60s drug addled brains see stealing from working taxpayers and giving to worthless parasites as some form of "compassion" and it makes them feel good about themselves. I can't tell you how many people I've encountered from somewhere else (often thousands of miles away) who, when asked, "what brought you to Vt." answer "I heard the welfare is good and easy to get"....Great strategy for attracting the worlds finest. The word is out.... Vt taxpayers are easy pickins ! I'm Outta here!

  7. I think some of these complainers are tighter than bark to a tree. My taxes went up the equivalent of 1 24 oz coffee a week. Less than inflation. I think I can deal with this minor increase.

    1. Whatever nimrod...money is money is money. I am tired of giving my money away for nothing. It is an embarrassment the looks and the state of this town and the systems in it. I don't work to give my money to people I work to keep it in my pocket not support the dimwits that bloodsuck their employment from town systems.

    2. Maybe if we're lucky you'll be fed up enough to leave town. I'll even by you a one way ticket.

  8. I found a place to save money, the police department. There has been a drug and gang problem here for years, but they haven't done a thing about it. Might as well cut out that useless line item on the budget.

    1. No, they make us money by writing speeding tickets.

It doesn't matter that the major crime drives away our families and businesses, we are getting money for the speeding tickets which is way more important than a tax base.

    2. ^ well, that doesn't seem like a good idea...

  9. I almost choked when I opened my new tax bill. For a town like this they are so ridiculously high to begin with, so any increase is like another kick in the pants to get out of here. We have a full service town, and no one to pay for those services... The ones who need them are not the ones paying taxes. And yes all the new families dad's are living in the prison.

  10. why should owners of "second homes" pay less in taxes that those of us with primary dwellings = because they are not using the school system - well, neither am I but then I can be treated badly because I am a senior citizen!!!!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Simple, because those 'second home' owners are paying school taxes in the location of their 'primary' residence.....get it?

  11. Our home values are dropping but our property taxes are increasing?

  12. Perhaps this increase is not that much and can be likened to a 24 ounce cup of coffee per week. But wait, the cost of a 24 oz cup of coffee is probably around $2 and this would equal $104 per year, not huge, but not insignificant. The issue is the tax rate in Springfield has been ridiculously high for years. It needs to go down. The town has been trying to support the same levels of service that were built up during the machine tool heyday. The burden has shifted to the property owners which is forcing people out of their homes and is discouraging people who are interested in moving here. Over the past few years I have heard from a number of people interested in buying a home in Springfield that the tax rate led them to look elsewhere.
Why has this not been addressed? Town management doesn't have the cojones to make difficult decisions. It's easier to let things ride. It would be very interesting to know how much is spent on pay, and particularly benefit contracts for town, fire dept, and police dept. To begin with I believe the fire and police depts are larger than in other similarly sized towns. You could argue that the police dept size may now be justified due to the prison and influx of criminal activity, but not if they are not addressing these issues. The school budget keeps going up as well, and I think part of that is it costs more to try to educate the huge increase in kids coming from broken, poverty stricken, and/or substance abusing homes. I mean no offense, but these families generally don't pay property taxes. Yes, I know the landlords do, but the housing itself is subsidized by tax dollars.

    1. First off if you want the burden of the taxes to be reduced on property owners then allow business into Springfield and stop fighting them tooth and nail. Its the NIMBY mentality that has gotten us here and now the property owners due bear the burden. Contracts are public record, get off your butt and go to the town office and do some research. In reference to the Fire Department size, no it is not bigger than other towns of similar size, in addition the fire department also serves as the towns ambulance service, so when both functions are combined and the station runs a two man shift 24/7 pretty good bang for your buck.

  13. We need a few more "Magic Mushroom" business. Hell, with all the drug dealings going on in this town, they should just rent a space next to the Magic Mushroom. I doubt they would get robbed! And, even if they did, we have a JAIL for them to reside. Then, when they get out=of=jail, they will be required by Probation and Parole not to leave the town as it will be a violation of their conditions. But wait, they won't have any money from robbing or drug dealing as they were in jail so, we will get them Section 8, welfare, vocational rehab services, free training, etc.. And if they are really lucky, will can put them up in a halfway house in Springfield. Raise the taxes!!! We need to pay, pay, pay for their stay, stay, stay!!! Unreal.
