September is Vermont Archaeology Month, and I'm getting into the spirit of it! For years, the volunteers of the Black River Action Team has been pulling all manner of "artifacts" out of the water during our annual RiverSweep cleanup (this year's Sweep is this Saturday!) -- what to DO with all this "treasure," you might ask? Since I haven't got a museum, I'm doing the next best thing: I'm leading a walking tour of Springfield's major historic industrial sites on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10-11:30am and I'll showcase our trove of fascinating items. Care to join me? It's free, so come on over and meet me in front of the United Methodist Church on Valley St by 10am and we'll get underway. Wear good walking shoes and bring a bottle of water and your camera. Let me know you'd like to come so I can be sure to have enough hand-outs and we don't leave without you! Call (802) 885-1533 or email me at blackrivercleanup@yahoo.com to reserve your space. (Note: we won't be entering any of the properties, this is an outdoor tour rain or shine.) Gear up for RiverSweep
The Black River needs your help! Join the fun with the Black River Action Team for the 13th Annual RiverSweep, held this Saturday, Sept. 8 from 8am till noon. Springfield's HQ table will once again be at the Citizens Bank drive-up near the footbridge in the Shopping Plaza; Ludlow BRATs should return to the gazebo on the town green in Veterans Park on Main St near the library to register and collect supplies. Gloves and bags will be on hand, but feel free to bring your own. Water and refreshments will be provided; lunch will also be provided to all volunteers, thanks to local sponsors and the generous support of the communities of the Black River basin. Bring your trash "haul" back to HQ for us to tally, and pick up your free 'thank you' tee shirt while you munch some lunch. Come for an hour, or come for the whole morning! Want to learn more? Contact me, BRAT Director Kelly Stettner, at (802) 885-1533 or blackrivercleanup@yahoo.com.
Rain or shine yard sale
Edwin Fransen invites everyone to the North School Preservation Society's indoor/outdoor fundraiser yard sale on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9am till 3pm. Held at the historic North School at 49 Main St in North Springfield, the sale will feature classrooms full of good-quality items ranging from books to housewares, small appliances to toys, furniture to sporting goods, and much more. Proceeds from the sale go toward maintaining the beautiful school property for continued public use and enjoyment. Access and parking is just off lower School St, around the corner from the (now closed) Main St Market building. Call (802) 886-2730 or 886-1186 for details.
Hoedown Showdown
Grab yer pardner and gallop over to One Credit Union at 380 River St in Springfield for a round-up of family fun on Saturday, Sept. 15. From 10am till 3pm, there'll be a variety of events happening at different times, including live music, games for the kids, free food, a 50/50 raffle and other great prizes (to benefit the Springfield Food Shelf), and an awesome burger cook-off.
