Springfield chef returns from 10 years abroad

Working in a five star hotel at the foothills of the Alps in Germany and Italy is a pretty good gig if you you're a chef.

Bo Celloto, 46, a former Culinary Arts student who recalled his high school days at the Technical Center at Springfield (now known as the River Valley Technical Center). He has spent the last decade traveling and working in Europe as a chef. Celloto grew up in Springfield, Vermont and attended Springfield High School. During his high school years in the Culinary program, he competed in the state VICA (Skills USA) competition and won the Gold medal. This launched him into the national competition in Phoenix, Arizona where he represented the State of Vermont and finished in the top 10 percent of the 50 state competitors. He also won a scholarship to the New England Culinary Institute and spent the next two years studying in Montpelier. "Today I look back and reflect on where I got my start, right here at Springfield High School and the Tech Center and really appreciate the solid foundation that formed my career early on." Said Celloto, as he spoke to students at the center this week. Celloto's career took him throughout New England, Colorado, and eventually Germany, Austria and Italy. He told the students to follow their passion, and take adventures in life. "I love to travel and my career as a chef feeds on my desire to do so, and my travel feeds on my desire to cook." He said. Celloto told the students to first, know what it is that they want, then go after it.

Celloto spoke with students who were being recognized as The River Valley Technical Center Students of the Quarter at a special luncheon served in their honor. He also spoke with the current Culinary Arts students in both Level I and Level II.
