SHS Alumni Springfield High School Graduates 106 Seniors Submitted by admin on Tue, 06/11/2013 - 2:56pm Valedictorian Lawrence Bolduc By BY GLORIA DUFIELD The Shopper SPRINGFIELD, VT -Friday’s heavy rains failed to dampen the enthusiasm of family and friends who gathered in the gymnasium of Riverside Middle School on Saturday for Springfield High School’s commencement exercises. The morning’s events began with opening remarks by the new Superintendent of Schools, Zachary McLaughlin, and were quickly followed by the welcome address by class of 2013 Salutatorian, Jennifer Stein. Ms. Stein referenced the Beatles lyrics “I get by with a little help from my friends” as she spoke of the support classmates and coaches had shown her as she strived to compete in high school athletics with a rod in her back. You could tell how important her classmates and time at Springfield High were to her as she quoted Winnie-the-Pooh: “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” She closed by reminding her classmates to always be kind and to smile big and often. Amelia Thomas, Class Vice President, and Courtney Page, Class Treasurer, provided the introduction for the keynote speaker, David Cohn, Director of Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction. They spoke of his positive and encouraging interactions with students and ceaseless faith in their class. At the start of his keynote address, Mr Cohan said he had found the most memorable graduation speeches had contained humor and his speech delivered. He had the entire gymnasiums laughing with his descriptions of fellow staff and preparation of his speech in a research style of a SHS student. As his address grew serious, he advised students to determine what they love, pursue what they love, and not let others or themselves stand in the way of that pursuit. Lawrence Boldoc, Valedictorian, advised his fellow classmates to be thankful for what they have, to be comfortable with themselves, and to strive for the best. His address included references to a Yiddish saying and quotes from both Henry David Thoreau and Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. He closed his speech with “Today we leave the harbor and tomorrow we set sail for paradise”. Mr. Bolduc was followed by his twin sister’s presentation of the class gift. Lauren Boldoc, Class President, provided examples of two individuals who had persevered in the face of setbacks and gone on to great successes, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Walt Disney. The 2013 class gift was a stone bench, fountain, and plants for the high school lobby. Principal Robert Thibault, assisted by members of the National Honor Society, handed out nearly 40 local scholarships and awards, many with multiple recipients. Mr. Thibault and Bindy Hathorn, Assistant Principal, awarded diplomas to 106 seniors. The graduates will be attending over 20 institutes of higher education including the University of Vermont, Southern New Hampshire University, Boston University, Mount Holyoke College, Wells College, Lyndon State College, Elms College, Community College of Vermont, Castleton State College, Universal Technical Institute, and O’Briens Aveda Institute. - See more at: http://www.vermontjournal.com/content/springfield-high-school-graduates-106-seniors#sthash.lPJCmImt.dpuf
