Published June 19, 2013 in the Rutland Herald Springfield Hospital chief on medical leave By SUSAN SMALLHEER Staff Writer SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Hospital chief executive officer Glenn Cordner is on medical leave, according to the chairman of Springfield Medical Care Systems. Cordner had earlier notified the hospital leadership that he planned to retire at the end of 2013 or early 2014, said Steve Birge, the board chairman. But Birge said right at the beginning of the search for Gorner’s replacement, he went on medical leave in April. “We’re hopeful he gets well and he’ll be able to get back,” Birge said. In the interim, Andy Majka has been moved into the chief executive officer’s position from his job as the hospital’s chief financial officer. Birge said that the hospital had hired a professional headhunting firm to help find Cordner’s successor. “We have hired Phillips DiPisa, a Boston-based executive search firm, to handle the search process,” he said. Phillips DiPisa specializes in medical executive searches. “We have a recruiter working on assembling the top candidates,” Birge said. “We’ll be interviewing them in three weeks and we’re hoping to narrow the search under 10 candidates,” He said interviews will be held during the third week of July. Cordner has retired before from the top job at Springfield Hospital. He left the hospital and its affiliated health care facilities in 2006 to pursue other interests. He came back in 2009, when his successor, Thomas Crawford, left in May 2009 for a job in Florida. When Cordner left in 2006, he had served the hospital for 22 years, the last 10 as chief executive officer. Majka, who has worked at the hospital for the last five years, is a candidate for the full-time position, Birge said. Majka did not return a telephone call or an email Tuesday. Under Cordner, the hospital and its parent organization, Springfield Medical Care Systems, has seen expansion and renovation, the most notable being the opening of doctors’ offices and a health care clinic in the former Fellows Gear Shaper building in downtown Springfield, a $15 million renovation project. The hospital also has clinics and offices in Bellows Falls, Chester and Ludlow, and Charlestown, N.H.
