'Pastor Mac' packs it in after 28 year stint

With his wife Linda at his side, Rev. Floyd McIntyre of the Advent Christian Church in North Springfield thanks the members of his congregation for all their support over the years. He retired last Sunday, enduring a joyous purple send off.

His final Sunday morning service was well attended as many friends, family members and former church members now living outside the area showed up for the occasion. A pot luck luncheon reception followed.

Pastor McIntyre earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology from Berkshire Christian College in 1973 and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Ministries from Wheaton College Graduate School in 1985, the year he was hired as pastor of the North Springfield Advent Christian Church. He and his first wife Margaret, who passed away a few years ago, raised their two children Bethany and Aaron here.

The Advent Christian Church is an evangelical denomination with about 35,000 members in 325 congregations in Canada and the United States. It is one of several Adventist churches that evolved from the teachings in the late 1840s of William Miller. It was organized in 1860 and an Advent Christian Church was established in North Springfield during that same decade.  90 years or more ahead of any other current day evangelical church in the Springfield area.

The Church's new pastor, Bill Krulish of Charlestown, N.H., became involved with the North Springfield church several months ago as an associate pastor, helping to ease the transition.

The Color Purple

Pastor Mac's dislike of the color purple was well known among the congregation. In the invitations mailed out in May, organizers of the event encouraged everyone to wear purple on his last day as pastor. But the pastor got wind of the scheme and beat them at their own game. Both he and his wife showed up wearing purple thus pranking the pranksters. Several of the pastor's top fans donned fake Pastor Mac beards (in its original reddish brown color) for the reception.
