Springfield starts campaign to make downtown mural permanent

The colorful mural crafted by chalk on the side of the Furman building in downtown Springfield is rapidly fading away, and community members have started a new online campaign to make the artwork permanent.

  1. Well seems to be spelled right and there are no Simpson references, so I say paint it!

  2. It is very pretty! Thanks for caring and adding some beauty to our town. We really could use something positive.

  3. How much will that cost? Maybe we need more Police before this happens.

  4. Right you are anon 12:43. More police so they can police that you did not leave your car idling more than 5 minutes while you gazed in wonder at this wonderful mural!!

  5. If you read it, it's by donations on Kickstarter. $600.

  6. Oh yes, another mural. What a wonderful sign of Springfield's economic vitality.

  7. In the late sixties you would have had several vehicles parked watching this type of psychedelic sign as they were tripping. Nowadays there is no need for this sign unless it is to remind all of the heroin addicts who are lost here on our streets where they are.

  8. How can this possibly hurt Springfield? it is a beautiful design and I would love to see it permanently painted on the building. Someone wants to do do something positive for the town so why all the negative comments? Personally, I say "Paint the mural!"

    1. I suspect the negative comments are a result of the lack of positive efforts by the town fathers to improve the town in real, meaningful ways. Say, economic development. Road improvements. Crime prevention and punishment. Vermont is suffering the results of the 'progressives' we keep electing to make us 'feel good' about ourselves. Time to elect a more conservative core and get tough on the issues instead of just covering the problems with money, or in this case, paint - and hoping the problem goes away.

    2. Route 11 in up for repaving soon...however, the State only owns the top 2 inches of asphalt within the Town limits. Therefore, unless the Town ponies up the money for full reconstruction, it will just be surface treated again, and crack and fall apart more quickly than a full depth reconstruction would.

    3. Exactly. Progressives thrive on cosmetic changes by which they can mask/avoid the root cause problem while duping the low information voter into believing they are earnest in their deeds. All the while however, the termites are feasting beneath the exterior and compromising the framework and foundation to such a degree that eventually the mere weight of one more progressive coat of paint will collapse it all.

  9. $600 dollar for paint? Must be shopping at Bibens, and including the Slim Jim and soda for snack break. Hope there is some sort of lacquer covering it so when the local hoodlums decide to spray paint over it, it will at least come off. Or ask a local plastic business to see if they can get some clear plastic sheet to cover the painting for protection.

    1. The local hoodlums have been respectful of the other murals around town...let's assume they will be respectful of this.

    2. No they haven't. Just last summer there were some throwing a knife into the fox mural near the library.

  10. Peace, love, dope! Really, when is Springfield ever going to get serious about its future?

  11. And Springfield on the Dole hasn't donated any of their free-gotten taxpayer dollars booty yet? This is right up their alley - meaningless logos, superfluous paint jobs...

    ReplyDelete
  12. Yes, paint it. Why do so many people have to be negative.

    ReplyDelete
  13. It violates local ordinances for signage.

    1. Like the Habitat for Humanity sign asking for car donations on the brown building on your way into town? That sign violates signage ordinances yet it has been there forever! And don't get me going on the condition of that building - even with the mural, it looks horrible.

  14. If you paint it, they will come...

  15. Yes, why don't they just shut up and use their own money to paint it? Why must the town always be subjected to these ploys for acquiring the public's acclamation and, of course, FUNDING, for every hare brained, feel-good idea that comes along?

    1. This sign violates the local business ordinance. If this sign is allowed then my business should be allowed the same size sign.

    2. What? Grant your BUSINESS a variance? Not in Springfield mister/missy! You dang capitalists want all the breaks! In Springfield, we cater to the socially disadvantaged, courtesy of your tax dollars.

    3. It may violate it but you can't do it because you might actually profit from people seeing your business advertised! There is absolutely no reason you should need or want to make money! They make welfare for that!

    4. You own a business?? Your working way to hard for your money. There is so many easier ways to get money around here then actually having to work for it!.

  16. It is a well designed and beautiful piece of art. When you start painting brick, you have to do it for the life of the building. Within 3 years it will need repainting. Is this where we want to spend long term finances?

  17. Naysayers on this one are being ridiculous and confusing.
Reading would provide answers. The town will not lose any money on upkeep, the building owner will. People who want to support it can donate. It seems to be a perfect conservative project that doesnt cost any taxpayer money. Why the problems and hate?
Confusion over the comment about Bibens. You don't want people to buy local? What is your point? Venting?
The suggestion about police first? For $600? Thank you for the chuckle.

    1. You fail to respond to the violation of local ordinance and if local businesses should be allowed the same variance...
