Woman avoids jail
on several charges
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A North Springfield woman who police said drove a reputed “Jersey Boys” drug gang member to a transaction a year ago where he sold heroin to a police informant will spend two years on probation.
Marie Townes, 30, of North Springfield, struck a plea deal last week that resolved several cases which had been filed against her over the past year, the most serious of which was aiding in the commission of a felony, a crime which is a felony itself, for which she received a one- to two-year sentence with all of that time suspended so she could be placed on probation.
According to detectives, Townes did not handle any of the heroin that was sold to an informant while a surveillance team watched on Feb. 20, 2013, but she was “within visual and earshot of the entire deal (and) also present during the conversation (detective’s were recording) about moving drugs and at what cost.”
The other cases Townes resolved last week involved pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges of providing false information to police, simple assault and disorderly conduct in a connection with separate incidents.
The false information case took place a year ago April when Townes answered the door of an apartment on Wall Street and told police a suspect they were looking for was in Chester. Minutes later police found him hiding under a crib inside the apartment.
The simple assault took place last May when Townes angrily got out of a car and pushed a woman she had spotted at a bus stop and the disorderly conduct charge stemmed from an incident on Clinton Street in July 2013 when several people were involved in a fight on a sidewalk.

Which idiot liberal judge went along with probation for this criminal?Springfield and Vermont will never eradicate their major drug problems by giving the criminals a hand slap sentence of probation. Participating in transporting and selling drugs, aiding and abetting a suspect, providing false information to police, simple assault and disorderly conduct and all you get is probation. The prosecutor and the judge need to spend some time in jail themselves for this type of behavior.
