Tragedy strikes Wing family again
Staff Report
SPRINGFIELD — The 15-year-old daughter of Springfield slaying victim Wesley Wing has died in a fall from the North Springfield flood control dam.
The investigation is continuing, pending toxicology tests, said Springfield Police Chief Douglas Johnston.
Johnston would not confirm the name of the teen who died Saturday, saying she was a juvenile. But a death certificate filed at the Springfield town office said Casey Wing was pronounced dead at 8 a.m. Sunday, with the time of death estimated at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
She died of multiple fractures and blunt impact to her head and torso, the certificate said, listing that she had fallen 85 feet. Her father was shot to death April 18 on South Street in Springfield. A neighbor, Gregory Smith, has been arrested and charged with murder. Wesley Wing had confronted Smith’s girlfriend about alleged drug dealing from their home in their neighborhood.
Casey Wing and her family, including her mother, two sisters and brother, participated in a public community vigil after her father’s death.
State’s Attorney Michael Kainen declined to comment, saying the case was still under investigation.
