A 36-year-old Perkinsville woman died on Thursday morning when a Charlestown man lost control of his southbound pickup truck on Interstate 91, crossing the median and striking her northbound vehicle head-on. Laura Cody McNaughton was a Springfield High School graduate and wife of Ethan McNaughton.

Bellows Falls will mourn loss of educator Barbara Comtois
One person was killed and another was injured in a head-on collision on Route 11, near Springfield Health and Rehabilitation Center Wednesday afternoon, according to police. Friends and family confirmed Barbara Comtois, 79, a longtime Bellows Falls resident and former educator, died in the crash.

Vermont State Police report an inmate at the Southern State Correctional Facility has committed suicide. On Friday, March 30, at approximately 7:44 p.m., the Southern State Correctional Facility advised the Vermont State Police of the suicide of inmate Nicholas Lynch, 37.

Police identify man found dead in culvert
Neale Gilson, 69, died overnight Tuesday. Police found him dead in a culvert at Springfield Hospital Wednesday around 9 a.m after the Country Village Community Care Home, where he lived, reported him missing around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

32-year-old Gregory A. Smith who was accused of fatally shooting a father of four in Springfield, Vt., nearly three years ago will head to trial later this week. Smith was born in Springfield and worked at Black River Produce at one time, according to court records.

In her prime, she was a strong influence in Springfield, voters electing her first to serve on the Selectboard and then later on, the Schoolboard. She was the leading advocate for the interests of North Springfield, where she resided for most of her life.
