Can you imagine yourself dressed as a pilot, air pirate, or engineer? Are goggles, parasols, top hats or some kind of mechanical gadget just your cup of tea? What we’re describing is Steampunk fashion that is based on a Victorian-era esthetic, but embellished and influenced by Steampunk science fiction like that of H.G. — a sort of sci-fi reverie of steam-powered Victoriana or Jules Verne rocketed into the 21st century on a Metal Moose (think Lemony Snicket). Come Saturday, Sept. 12 from 2-3 p.m. at the Great Hall prepared to go back in time and space to the industrialized 19th century through a Victorian science fiction fashion fantasy featuring outfits that are not meant for everyday, but are designed to showcase the essence of Steampunk. Local and national designers showcasing Steampunk style include Pamela Moore Bridals from Brattleboro, VT. With an extensive background in designing and creating costumes, Pamela Moore is a natural for a theatrical event like a wedding…and in this case the Springfield Steampunk fashion show. Moore is planning to unveil the ultimate Steampunk bride as part of the Steampunk fashion event, along with other Steampunk inspired costumes. Moore says that more and more brides are embracing the captivating look where old meets new with a Victorian Steampunk theme. Moore will be designing costumes for the “The One Wheel Wonders” who will be performing as part of her fashion segment. They are a dynamic young duo who combine acrobatics with unicycling. Ella Warner from Putney, Vermont and Wesley Williams from Weston, Florida met at “Circus Smirkus”-Vermont’s own award winning youth circus. This past year, they performed all over America and were featured on season 10 of “America’s Got Talent.” Ella and Wesley look forward to performing and donning their Steampunk costumes at the Springfield Steampunk Festival. Also participating is Janel Norris, from Agawam MA owner of the Fairy Stitch Factory. She specializes in creating fantasy and steampunk costumes, crowns, wings and jewelry. And steaming in from the west is Mistress Fogg a.k.a. Angela Hartshorn from Manitou Springs, CO. Karrie-Ann Versae from Stockholm, NJ will be creating necklaces for the show. In a twist of audience participation, festivalgoers dressed Steampunk style are also invited to join the fashion show at the end. This is a chance to showoff your own Steampunk creativity in the spotlight of the Great Hall’s stage. In addition to fashion, the 3-day festival features a Stargazer’s Ball, and some of the hottest bands around including Venus Lens Cap, Rusty Belle, HUMANWINE, Electric Sorcery, Ida Mae Specker & The Honest Mistakes, the Suitcase Junket and Tritium Well. The entire weekend is packed with Steampunk activities, including a talk by Bruce Rosenbaum who was dubbed the “Steampunk Guru” by the Wall Street Journal, an Absinthe Workshop/tasting conducted by expert S. B. MacDonald who is devoted to the world of absinthe and hosts regular tastings around the world. From children’s activities, to tea dueling, and a tweed ride, to a closing event picnic, there is something happening every hour. All weekend, vendors from all over the country will be selling everything Steampunk and more. The Steampunk Society of Vermont and the Hartness House Inn present the Springfield Steampunk Festival. Tickets and full schedule: www.springfieldvtsteampunkfest.com. Proceeds benefit the Springfield Community Center. Main events will occur at the Great Hall, One Hundred River Street and the Hartness House Inn, 30 Orchard Street. Shuttle buses will be running regularly.
