Sponsored by the Springfield High School Alumni Association, the fair continues to be one of the largest events in Springfield and is the Alumni Association’s largest fundraiser. Over 90 talented crafters from all over the region showcased their handmade wares at this event. Balsam wreaths and Kettle corn aromas wafted through the unusually warm temperatures and sunshine, greeting Christmas shoppers attending the 37th Annual Beyond the Unicorn Christmas Craft Fair at Riverside Middle School on Saturday, Dec. 5th. Inside - three floors of wonderful food and crafts awaited the seasoned buyers. From hand beaded ornaments to hand sewn tote bags, from scrumptious BBQ sauces to creamy fudge, from hand carved toys to knit and beaded jewelry, there was absolutely something for everyone. “I just love to shop here! I find something for everyone, “ said Mary Simineau. “I even find something for me,” she commented proudly holding up her hand painted candy dish, The booths held an array of gift items such as cutting boards of Mahogany Maple, and Cherry gracefully displayed. There was so much to look at and so many people to maneuver. To really look and shop it took more than two hours to get through all of the booths. Springfield High School students provided wrapping of gifts. “Look at this scarf! I just love it. It is perfect for my Mom,” said Carol Petur as she cuddled her marbled scarf while waiting for wrapping. Crafters are selected for the diversity and quality of their product. This year those products included Bath and Body creations from bees wax, honey and goat’s milk, hand painted glass, slate, metal and wood, pottery, wind chimes, home décor, photography, stained glass, clocks, ornaments of all kinds and much more. Specialty foods included dip and soup mixes, olive oil blends, vinegars, various sauces, honey, maple syrup, jams, jellies fudge, BBQ, breads, pies and of course the kettle corn. Other items included coasters, hand turned pens, marbled scarves, dolls, wooden toys, birdhouses of wood and gourds, and pet treats and apparel. Established in 1978 by the Springfield Alumni Association, The Beyond the Unicorn Craft Fair raises funds for Alumni activities and scholarships given each June. The Beyond the Unicorn II Craft Fair is always held the first Saturday in December. Mark your calendars now for next year - Sat., Dec 3rd - so you won’t miss it.

It is one of the best craft fairs around. They also have delicious chowder, sandwiches and baked goodies for lunch in the cafeteria.
