Photo provided SPRINGFIELD, Vt. – Springfield Prevention Coalition board members recently presented certificates of appreciation to a collection of local retailers who passed alcohol compliance checks for not selling alcohol to minors. SPC board members, Alice Emmons, Charles Gregory, Tara Chase, Gerry Piper, along with SPC executive director, Stephanie Thompson, presented Retailer Recognition certificates to the following Springfield retailers: Black Rock Steakhouse, 56 Main Street, 371 Restaurant, and Shaw’s Supermarket. A study conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, shows that retailers complying with identification checking of alcohol purchasing customers help to make alcohol less accessible to minors, thus impacting youth underage drinking rates. The Springfield Prevention Coalition (SPC), in partnership with Windsor County Prevention Partners (WCPP), engage in Retailer Recognition initiatives as a way to let the community know that keeping area youth safe matters. Pastor Gerry Piper commented that the retailers “are keeping youth healthy by following the law.” Fellow board member, Charles Gregory echoes that, “It is very helpful to know there are situations where they do the right thing by saying no.” Other retailers in Windsor County who recently passed these checks include: Brownsville General Store, Brownsville; Goodfellas Petroleum, Inc., Ludlow; Ludlow Country Store, Ludlow; Mini Beez, LLC, Cavendish; Sandri #204, Ascutney; and Windsor Wine & Spirits, Windsor. According to the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 30% of Springfield high school students reported drinking alcohol within the past 30 days and of those students 5% bought their own alcohol. Retailers who pass compliance checks are helping alcohol from getting into the hands of youth.
