Windsor 3-2 October 28,2016 Windsor 3-2 Editor’s note: Area candidates in House races were offered an opportunity to answer five questions from the Vermont Press Bureau. Here are the provided responses for the Windsor 3-2 House race. Scott Frye Hometown: Springfield Party: Republican Occupation: Small business owner What should the state do about Vermont Health Connect? Health connect, from all that I’ve heard thus far, is a train wreck and there’s talk of spending at least $125,000 to look for an outside vendor just to fix the website? We need to replace this mess with something else. We need to look beyond what the Democrat Party has stuck us with and hold those accountable who spent close to $200 million on a website that doesn’t work right. Should the state be taking different measures to change the way education is funded? Why or why not? Families are leaving the state in untold numbers. We have the second-lowest growth rate in the entire country. The schools, at least in my town, are not meeting state standards in basic skills. When you don’t have the tax base to properly fund things like schools, something needs to change. I’m for more charter schools and school voucher program. I’m am not for Act 46 and do not see the benefits that were allegedly promised. Should marijuana be legalized in Vermont. Why or why not? The last time this was proposed and voted on, it was soundly defeated. Many of the tax and spender types in Montpelier see legalization as tax revenue. I believe that the jury is still out on this issue and to look at Colorado as an example. Not everything is rosey with what is going on there. Should the state look at expanding the sales tax to include services in addition to goods? No. Not ever. Our state is one of the most heavily taxed states in the country. We have a spending problem and adding more taxes to an already struggling economy will not help. It will however keep businesses from coming here and it will drive residents to get services from out of state. What is the single biggest challenge facing Vermont today? The economy. Democrats have brought our state to the point where it cannot compete with New Hampshire and New York. More and more taxes, uncontrolled spending with no accountability, new tax proposals from the Democrat party which, if enacted, will drive more families and businesses away from our state. None of these help us. Democrats Alice Emmons and Robert Forguites of Springfield; George McNaughton, an independent from Springfield; and Republican Dennis Pine of Springfield did not return the questionnaire.
