SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield Selectboard honored the Springfield High School state champion field hockey team with a proclamation in recognition of the Cosmos' recent VPA Division 2 championship during its meeting Monday evening.
The proclamation states, in part, “We realize that participating in organized athletics helps to build character and teaches a wholesome sense of fair play and good sportsmanship among our youth; and … to really excel in any one sport, a young person must demonstrate, in addition to a great deal of natural ability, an outstanding spirit of dedication, enthusiasm, and hard work.
“THEREFORE The Springfield Selectboard takes great pleasure in recognizing the significant athleticism and accomplishment of the Springfield High School Cosmos Field Hockey Team achieving success with winning the State Championship title and herewith expresses our sincere congratulations.”
Springfield (11-4-1 overall) posted an 8-4-1 regular season record which included a seven-game win streak (eight without a loss) and seven shutout victories.
During the playoffs the fourth-seeded Cosmos defeated Mt. Abraham, Harwood and second-seeded Woodstock by 1-0 verdicts to claim the program's first state title in 30 years. The win over the Wasps in the championship game also avenged a 3-0 loss in the second game of the season.
This year's team also included three players from Windsor, whose program folded prior to the start of the 2015 season.
Cosmos team members are Miranda Todt, Ashleay Wilcox, Karlee Brown, Maddi Macie, Makenna Goodrich, Ericka Schoff, Angelina Bigwood, Allison Worster, Madee Stagner, Emily Therrien, Sofia Gulick, Katie Worth, Meranda Keough, Paige Congdon, Emilia Battista, Lucia Coutermarsh, Halley Perham, Katie Masure, Chelsey Millay and Aunna Parker.
Springfield is co-coached by Lyndsie Perkins and Kelly DeAngelis.
