Springfield man extradited to New Hampshire November 13,2016 By ERIC FRANCIS CORRESPONDENT WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A Springfield construction worker arrested at the end of last month as a fugitive from New Hampshire has waived extradition and agreed to face felony shoplifting charges in the Granite State. Jared Stockman, 34, of Springfield spent a weekend in jail in Vermont before resolving his outstanding Windsor County cases by pleading guilty to a charge of retail theft and two counts of violating a curfew. That curfew had been imposed earlier in the fall in Windham County after Stockman was arraigned at the courthouse in Brattleboro where he pleaded innocent to a felony count of unlawful trespass into a residence as well as two misdemeanor counts of violation of an abuse prevention order. Although the Windham County cases remain open, Stockman will be transported to New Hampshire in the meantime to deal with warrants that were issued in August charging him with two felony counts of shoplifting and attempted shoplifting. In an affidavit filed with the court, Chester Police Sergeant Mark Phelps said he came across Stockman and arrested him as a fugitive from New Hampshire during the course of an investigation into an unrelated commercial burglary in which “Jared Stockman was the main suspect.” Detective Phelps wrote that when he ran a police computer check on Stockman he found that the Lebanon, New Hampshire police department was looking to arrest Stockman in connection with two shoplifting incidents that took place earlier this year at the Walmart in their town. Lebanon Police reported that on May 28th Stockman allegedly managed to push a shopping cart containing a tower fan and two twelve-packs of Twisted Tea worth $191 dollars out the door without paying but they said that a second alleged “push-out theft” attempt a week later was thwarted by Walmart’s store security. “The second incident occurred on June 1st. Stockman can be seen in surveillance footage loading up his shopping cart with merchandise worth $665 and pushing the cart past all points of sale where he was stopped and asked to show his receipt,” Phelps wrote in his affidavit, continuing, “Stockman told the manager that his girlfriend had the receipt and went off to find her (but) he was not located after that point and time.” Lebanon Police later interviewed the girlfriend who had been at Walmart that day with Stockman and said she admitted he had been there with her on both occasions but she denied she’d been working with him to steal items, Detective Phelps recounted. In clearing the way for his extradition to New Hampshire to face the more serious charges on that side of the Connecticut River, Stockman ended up resolving his outstanding Windsor County cases by pleading guilty to theft of $40 worth of cigarettes from the Penguin Mart in Springfield and two counts of violating his curfew on the still open Windham County cases. He was sentenced to 3-to-4 days in jail and given credit for the four days he had spent in detention over the weekend waiting to appear in court.
