Springfield's Alex Warner opened the snowboarding season with a victory in the giant slalom at Okemo Mountain Tuesday afternoon.
Warner, a senior, posted a two-run combined time of 1:29. 77, besting the runner-up by 1.28 seconds to lead a field of 25 competitors.
“He did real well,” said Springfield coach Derek Graham.
The victory has already topped last season's best showing in the GS. His highest finish in the event was second, twice, at Okemo and Jay.
“Alex did really well last year,” Graham said. “He ended up finishing second.”
That's second in the state — he was third in the halfpipe, seventh in slopestyle and eighth in GS to snatch the overall silver medal at the state championships.
Also placing for the Cosmos in the season opener were Owen Kelly in 13th place in the boys division and newcomer Bella Bortlein in 12th in the girls division.
“Owen did really well, his best finish ever at a meet,” Graham said.
Of Bortlein, he said, “This was her first snowboarding meet ever. It was good to see her place and doing better than some of the other kids, and see what it's like.
“Overall, it was a really good day. Now we have some things that we can work on and build on.”
Springfield will be back in action on Jan. 23 at another GS at Stowe.
