Winter Carnival set for Feb. 10-12 Rutland Herald | January 24, 2017 By SUSAN SMALLHEER STAFF WRITER SPRINGFIELD SPRINGFIELD — Organizers of the 2017 Springfield Winter Carnival hope to rebound from last year’s snow-challenged celebration. Winter carnival was a longtime tradition in Springfield that had fallen out of favor, but a group — headed by the Springfield Chamber of Commerce, Springfield Parks and Recreation Department and the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center — have built the festival back up to its former fun. This year’s event will be held at the Crown Point Country Club in Springfield on Feb. 10-12, with festivities ranging from a broomhockey tournament, a cardboard sled contest and a Best Snowman contest held throughout the town. Other additions this year include Wunderle’s Big Top Adventures on Saturday and downhill kayak races Sunday. The kayak races will have a rock ’n’ roll theme, said Caitlin Christiana of the Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce. As in years past, there will be a fireworks display at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and while parking is limited at the country club, there will be free shuttle bus service from Riverside Middle School. People can pre-register for any of the races, or show up 30 minutes before the Sunday events. In addition to the various competitions, there is open skating and sledding Saturday and Sunday. There will be a bonfire at 7:45 p.m., on Saturday. For more information, including schedules, check the festival’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ SpringfieldWinterCarnival, or www.SpringfieldVtParksandRec. com.
