Raiders baseball blanks Cosmos Rutland Herald | May 10, 2017 By POODY WALSH CORRESPONDENT SPRINGFIELD – Reece de Castro and Ben Simpson each had three hits and Kyle Cassarino had a three-run double as Rutland cruised to an 18-0 win over Springfield Tuesday in a Marble Valley League game at Birsky-Wyman Field. The Raiders, now 6-3, pounded out 14 hits, scoring runs in bunches, including seven in the third. “ We’ve had a lot of close games recently and some kids haven’t had much of an opportunity to play,” said Rutland coach Matt Bloomer. “ So it was good to have a game like this so everybody could get in.” Brayden Shannon and Dalton Hotchkiss shared the pitching duties for Rutland. Shannon went the first three innings and Hotchkiss the final two in a game that was halted after fifth inning by the mercy rule. Both pitchers gave up just one hit. Rutland scored four runs in the first on four hits, a Springfield error, a balk, a wild pitch and a passed ball. In the second the Raiders loaded the bases with no outs as Jacob Godfrey, Jaxon Smith and de Castro had consecutive singles. Springfield pitcher Nick Bedi looked like he might get out of the inning as he got two pop-ups, but Cassarino blasted a basesclearing double to the rightcenter gap. Rutland then sent 13 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring seven times. “It was a game that gave us the opportunity to try some people at different positions,” said Bloomer. “There were lot of positives to be taken from this game today.” Bedi and Dylan Merrow had the Springfield hits. Bedi was on the hill for three innings for the Cosmos with John Stafford hurling the final two frames. Springfield only had three base runners, the two singles and a walk to Levi Perham. None of runners got past second base. Springfield dropped to 2-6 with the loss. Next for Rutland is a home game with Hartford on Thursday while Green Mountain comes to Springfield on Saturday. Rutland has another good matchup coming on Saturday with Fair Haven coming in to Giorgetti Park.
