2017-05-11 / Local HCRS and Parks Place host a screening of 'Healing Voices' SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Health Care and Rehabilitation Services (HCRS), Vermont’s second largest community mental-health agency, is hosting a screening of "Healing Voices." This documentary places a spotlight on mental health — or what society refers to as “mental illness.” The HCRS and Parks Place Community Resource Center-sponsored screening will take place in Springfield on Tuesday, May 23, at the Springfield Cinemas 3, located at 26 Main St., Springfield. The screening will start promptly at 7 p.m. An open discussion will follow the conclusion of the film. "Healing Voices," written and directed by P.J. Moynihan of Digital Eyes Film, explores the experience commonly labeled as “psychosis” through the stories of real-life individuals and asks the question, “What are we talking about when we talk about ‘mental illness.” The film follows three subjects – Oryx, Jen and Dan – over nearly five years; it features interviews with notable international experts including Robert Whitaker, Dr. Bruce Levine, Celia Brown, Will Hall, and Dr. Marius Romme on the history of psychiatry and the rise of the “medical model” of mental illness. The documentary is ideal for individuals with lived experience in the mental-health system, educators, peer counselors, advocates, researchers, psychiatrists, psychologists, healthcare workers, first responders, family members and anyone who has been touched by mental-health issues in their lives.
