Springfield Library invites conversation | November 03, 2017 FacebookTwitterGoogle+Share SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Where are public libraries headed? What does Springfield need for good library service? Join a lively Community Conversation at the Springfield Town Library from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14. There’s only have room for 50 people, so register now. Call the library at (802) 885-3108 to sign up, or use the Community Conversation link at the website, springfieldtownlibrary.org. The conversation will include a show of hands for library use (how often? Use computers? Hang out? Borrow books?) and a flying slideshow on the weird and wonderful things public libraries do. No preparation required — though feel free to think about what ONE thing you want the library to do. Staff and board are writing a new strategic plan, based on the ideas and aspirations of Springfield.
Like post offices people who use them are a dying breed. Careful of all the syringes in the parking lot.
ReplyDeleteWould like to see you "send" a two pound package across country with yer frkn smartphone.
DeleteThere are more people using the library these days than ever! Have you been in there lately?
Delete...and our library does not have a parking lot, so maybe you're thinking of something else entirely?
What a sad comment.
ReplyDeleteSpringfield Library is a vital part of this community. The staff is always helpful and welcoming. There are new programs to interest and benefit a wide population. For some, the library provides internet access which is helpful in gaining employment and staying in touch with friends and family. I have listened to and enjoyed books on tape for many years. Just published books and current films on DVD are available and what the library doesn't have, they try very hard to obtain through the interlibrary lending program. I have always been impressed with what our local library has to offer and how dedicated the staff is.
Reading abilities in general seem to have declined. That's just a personal observation; not many people I encounter either in person or online read much, and when they do it's often superficially. That probably correlates somehow with thinking abilities.
ReplyDeletePhil, Lexicographers write the best reading around.
DeleteGiven that the quality of the information on the Internet is questionable at best, and horribly wrong generally, public libraries are the ONLY place where you can find information that is trustworthy. In college, I continuously amazed my professors and fellow students with the information I obtained there. I almost never used the Internet, and I aced every term paper in every class. Get off your "smart" phones and hit the library if you really want to learn something.

ReplyDeleteUh, you're kidding, right? Hey editors, you need to do some editing!
DeletePhilip, you're spot on with the comment about "superficial reading." It's not so much a matter of access to an overload of inaccurate information as it is a lack of critical thinking when reading tripe. Unfortunately, with Springfield's murder of the advanced placement courses in school, we're not really doing much to deal with the problem.
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought the Smartphone replaced written text on papyrus. All knowledge of the universe right there at your fingertips. Who needs advanced courses when at the age of 15 you know everything, till the battery goes dead. But all this knowledge can be hazardous when "consuming" if you are walking and fall into traffic, or worse yet when you are driving, yes you. You know who you are,the fine should increase to 1000 bucks first offense.
