'They killed him': As a Vermont inmate suffered from untreated cancer, officials delayed care

Bobby Hutt died of cancer in October 2014, after suffering for over a year. His sisters say the Vermont Department of Corrections "killed him" by waiting until the cancer got so bad that Bobby's leg broke beneath him.

  1. Did he afford his victims any greater compassion? Romans 12:19

    1. There is nothing more blasphemous and disgusting than someone using the Bible as a justification for treating someone else badly. What would Jesus have done?

    2. Look, you have to die somewhere. What do you want my (vermont) tax dollars to ease your pain and suffering. I can see it coming
      ,a new vt law.

    3. We ALL pay taxes, 6:08, some of us are just not heartless scum. I'm sure when you're in a nursing home, it'll be everybody else's taxes (including mine) paying for it. Do you want us to pull the plug on YOU? When the time comes, you won't care a single damn WHOSE taxes are paying for it, as long as you get to draw that next breath! I also detest when people wrap themselves in the Bible (or the flag) and then procede to bash people, for it is ALSO written: "He who is without sin may cast the first stone." Or try this one: "Heal the sick among you." Here's another one: "Forgive as you are forgiven." Oh, and let's not forget "Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's." These are not suggestions, they are COMMANDS FROM ALMIGHTY GOD. If you are going to quote Him, GET IT RIGHT!

    4. A tooth for a tooth,an eye for an eye, pull the plug an let me die. I don't want you preaching over me.

    5. 8:28, how many teeth and eyes do you have? If you REALLY practiced what YOU preached, you'ld probably have none! I'd bet your talking about other people's eyes and teeth, which you would gladly sacrifice to benefit yourself!

    6. Tell us exactly why you put this article on this blog. You say "they" killed him. YOU are WRONG. What is it YOU are looking for?Tears, support, justice, money? Well look somewhere else.

  3. I don't know what this guy did to get put in prison. I don't think it really matters. If we, as a society, can't a least provide basic, humane services to inmates then we are no better than they are. Denying treatment, even if it was only painkillers as he died, IS TANTEMOUNT TO TORTURE! We MUST be better than that, or we will end up with a country that isn't worth living in. It isn't about what HE deserves, it's about who and what WE are!

    1. Well call Jeff Sessions, the Attorney General. Yesterday he said he stands up for Justice. Ask him that today and he may "not recall".

  4. When times are good for us, we relax, we become more lenient and liberal. We forgive the shoplifter, the sex worker, the jaywalker, the pilferer, the lackadaisical workman, because we know that we have the power to correct them if we really want to.

But when times are tight for us, we pucker up. We start dumping on those, others like them and the defenseless as well. Having lost the comfort of being in charge of our lives, we use hatred and vindictiveness to prove to ourselves that we still have some power to control things.

So, there are people in Springfield who voted for Donald Trump and who dump on people who die while paying their debt to society. I'm sure they're the same person in every case.

    2. Society pays these folks debt through taxes, drug treatment programs, probation officers, court officers, police officers, correction officers, welfare payments, subsidized housing (if they get out of prison), and the list goes on. All dumped on the back of the middle class taxpayer who dreams of a pay raise, a vacation, ability to send their child to college, etc. Not going to find much sympathy here. MAGA.

    4. Well, you can just keep right on dreaming about that pay raise and that vacation, because under the Trump/GOP tax plan, your taxes will go up. CEO's aren't going to give workers a raise, either. They've admitted as much. But don't worry, Trump's kids will inherit an extra billion dollars. MAGGOT.

    5. Oh you must be thinking about the good times under Obama when the streets were paved with gold and everything was free! Economically it was so much better with the 1% growth, stagnant wages, promises of cheaper health care that wasn’t, abdication of a coherent foreign policy. Man those were the days! Let’s hurry up and elect Bernie so we can be like Venezuela!
      Puhleeze....

      Delete
    6. No, I'd prefer the days under Jimmy Carter, Lyndon Johnson, or Kennedy, even Eisehower, when the top tax rate was about 90%, half the workforce was Union, and most people did very well. (I'm old enough to remember those days) At least Obama didn't make a fool of himself, as well as America, every time he opened his mouth. Get a clue idiots, Trump is a sick joke! Supply side economics? Puhlease!!!!!!

    7. Those days are gone and they aren’t coming back. The US was the only functioning economy after WW2 with little industrial competition. Once other first world countries recovered by the 1970s the advantage was gone. Carter presided over runaway inflation and 21% mortgage interest rates, gas shortages, and a hostage crisis. Kennedy who liberals LOVE despite the fact he was a serial womanizer, passed tax cuts of the very kind you’re whining about. You seem to have selective memory when it comes to the good old days. What happened? You might want to get tested for Alzheimer’s. MAGA!

Your memory will become less selective if you read a couple of books: 1) The Reckoning," by David Halberstam, which tells how Big Auto never bothered to innovate in the 60's, setting itself up for failure in the 70's. 2) "The Triumph of Finance and The Decline of America," by Jeff Madrick, which tells how Wall Street pinned America's economic future on the creation of a fantasy finance league.

As for MAGA, If anybody can explain to me how the failed Republican health care bill or the present Republican "tax reform" bill are going to help 99.8% of Americans, I'd appreciate it.

      Delete
    9. But isn't Trump trying to "take us back" to those days, hence the "again" in MAGA? If not, just what "again" is he talking about? The Robber Baron days, or maybe the Antebellum South? PROBABLY BOTH! Yes, Kennedy pushed tax cuts, but not nearly as low as today, and it was the REPUBLICANS who disagreed, saying it would hurt the economy! My how things have changed! By the way, the economy was doing pretty good by 1980 (Reagan was hoping no one would notice.) Carter had already secured the release of the hostages, until Reagan botched it to get elected. (Can you say Iran-Contra?) Jimmy Carter came as close to a balanced budget as any President had ever come, and would have balanced it a second term. The gas shortage of '79 was fake; engineered by the big oil companies like Rex Tillerson's old employer, EXON MOBIL. Those high mortage interest rates STAYED that high until (gasp) Bill Clinton lowered them, triggering the longest period of economic growth in our Nation's history. Oh, and he also raised taxes on the wealthy. (Gee, that didn't help, did it?) I'll make a deal with you; I'll get tested for Alzheimer's if Trump does. I'm not worried about the results, but I bet The Donald would be! MAGGOT!

    10. Free oil in SD. The keystone pipeline, the one the JERK had go thru, just dumped 210000 gallons. Yours, just go there and mop it up.

    13. Carter got the hostages released only to wait until AFTER the election for it to happen so Reagan got the credit?! You have got to be in the end stages of dementia!

      Delete
    14. No, Reagan went to Iran and convinced the Iranians to keep the hostages until AFTER the election to deny Carter the credit (they sat on the tarmac at the Teheran airport until Reagan was sworn in.) In return, Iran was illegally given weapons. (Iran-Contra) In 1980, I was making the modern equivalent of about $35 an hour as a busboy at the Drake Oakbrook. As I recall, Trump was a running joke around there; those who knew him regarded him as a fraud who lied about his wealth, just as he does today. He was NOT welcome there. Apparently, he had to buy his own country club just to belong to one! MAGGOT!

It was a for-profit prison in Arizona. They don't get paid for sick prisoners who are removed, and it cuts into the profit if they treat them. As both incarcerated and untreated, he was an asset to them. They had no incentive to do more than they did.

    1. Chuck, based on your reasoning, I fail to understand how a deceased prisoner will provide financial gain for the prison. This logic that every entity needs to be operated by the government meshes well with a place called North Korea. I'd gladly pay to ship your bike over to you....

The article said he was in an Arizona prison. We ship our prisoners to for-profit prisons. If their prisoner is sick and shipped to another prison, they can't charge for housing him. If the prisoner gets medical treatment, it costs them money. They had no more incentive to do more than house him. Capiche? as they used to say in WWII.

    3. Capiche. Thanks for the clarification Chuck. I guess, services administered by the government must be far superior to all others... I wonder if the dying vets on the VA waiting lists would agree?

1:53, the dying non-vets who are on no waiting list would rather have a government-run universal health care program than have to endure their wait for treatment because they have no money. The VA might have waiting lists, but it is ranked as inarguably-- that's inarguably-- the best health care system in the country. Just ask an acquaintance of mine who got sick, lost his job because of it and is now fighting Workman's Comp for treatment whether he would like better health care coverage than the "free market" provided him.
