The Dam Run was founded by Joseph Cerniglia, Jr. of Springfield, Vt. After going through his own journey from being inactive to active, Cerniglia wanted others to begin the same journey and created an event that gets people moving. Cerniglia has gone on to complete significant athletic achievements including, a seven-time Ironman finisher, Ironman World Championship in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, and qualified for the Boston Marathon multiple times proving it is not where you start your journey, but where you finish. Currently a USAT certified coach, Cerniglia continues to give back to his community through events like the Dam Run.

The purpose of the annual Springfield Dam Run and Fun Run is to promoting an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as provide an opportunity for family and friends to get together and be a part of their local community. The Dam Run attracts hundreds of runners and walkers from all over Vermont and New Hampshire.

Each year the highlight of the day is the annual community inspiration award. This award recognizes a local resident for their efforts in leading, promoting, or supporting their community. Past award winners include: Maureen Fannning-Duqette, Springfield Police Officer Walter Morancy, Chip Howard, and Riverside Middle School Principal Nathan McNaughton. If you know someone who goes above and beyond to promote health and wellness in our community or has overcome a challenge, consider nominating them for this year’s Community Inspiration Award. Nominations can be sent to 335 River Street, Springfield, VT 05156.

In addition to a great race/walk and awards, there will also be some great prizes available at the ceremony immediately after the finish. Two youth bicycles, gift certificates, and other great prizes will be available to those who participate. New this year will be a Smoothie Bar sponsored by the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center. Taste some great, healthy concoctions to help refuel your body.

This event would not be possible without the great support it receives from local businesses and sponsors. A special thank you to this year’s sponsors: Springfield Medical Care Systems, Wellwood Orchards, Vianor Tire, the Springfield Teachers Association, Mascoma Bank, Cota and Cota, Von Bargen’s Jewelry, Springfield Housing Authority, IPG Benefits, Boccacio’s, Briar Patch Farms, Parker and Ankuda, Muse and Associates, Bibens Ace Hardware, Macloamainn’s, Green Mountain Classics, and Carla Kelley.

All proceeds from the Springfield Dam Run are donated to local charities.
