Legislature recognizes HCRS’ 50th anniversary

HCRS was recognized by the Vermont House of Representatives for our 50th anniversary celebrated in 2017. In a concurrent resolution signed by the Senate and House of Representatives on May 3, HCRS was recognized for many highlights of their history.

The opening of the Beekman House residential program in 1979, beginning to offer employment services in 1984, establishing a school-based program in 1987, launching our Police Social Work program in 2002, achieving Joint Commission accreditation in 2003, and opening Vermont’s first Crisis Care Center in 2010.

Valerie A. Stuart, Mollie Burke, and Tristan Toleno, House Representatives for the Windham District, sponsored the resolution in honor of the agency’s 50th anniversary. The resolution further highlights the comprehensive services offered at HCRS: mental health support services, substance abuse services, and developmental disability services.

HCRS CEO George Karabakakis, Ph.D., was asked to attend the legislative ceremony for the signing of the resolution. He states, “We are thankful for the recognition of the Vermont legislature for the services we have provided in our communities for more than half a century. A special thanks to Valerie Stuart, Mollie Burke, and Tristan Toleno for their work to highlight the significant need for social services.”

    1. They do a job you wouldn't want to do ... or could do.

    2. I used to work there. It was a terrible job and a huge waste of money and time. I have a friend on Facebook who still works there that puts pictures up of him and clients going fishing, hiking and other things while getting paid 15 to $16 an hour! A group of people went to a Red Sox game last year with a one-to-one ratio of providers and clients. They took a very nice tour bus down there to Boston.
The money wasted there is very scary. The average home provider receives about $3,000 a month, respite providers receive $150 a day!
I would go on however I am getting sick to my stomach recalling all of this.

    3. Anonymous 10:01 Thanks for the insight, most of us can see the waste, this place is not managed it just happens and our state and local legislators don't have the backbone to do anything about it. Come on Dick McCormick, Bob Forguites, Alice Nitka, Alice Emmons, Alison Clarkson and Thomas Bock stand up for tax payers which are voters and do something about it STOP THE WASTE!

  2. The employees do a job, but their clients get checks and cash them and have no supervision to where the money gets spent. Where does that money come from? Us, the tax payers.

  3. would not want to I agree, could I, yes can do anything, but that's not the point, they are a contract bureaucracy that this state will pump money into over and over, they also have folks in their program that do not need to be. The state and some families send them there because they don't want to deal with them. I agree some need this type of program, but my guess and just a guess is it could be cut in half if it were ran like a business not a slush fund dumping ground.
My complaint is there is no over sight of our tax dollars at this place money is not a consideration, look at the building and how many people work there.
    I have a job, don't need one.

  5. Oh, cry me a river all you whiners! You complain now, but when it's your turn to need something it's "gimme, gimme, gimme!" I've seen it time and time again; you conservatives become AWFULLY liberal when YOU want something! And now the cries of "we paid for it, we paid for it!" As if you're the only ones who ever paid for anything. Sooner or later, ALL of you will need some help from SOMEONE! THAT'S what being part of a community means; providing services to those in need, not grabbing all you can and telling everyone else to kiss off! LIKE YOU ALL DO! Every person on this blog will give what money you have to your kids, and after five years, you'll be on Medicaid, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE! So cut the crap!
