COURTESY SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — "Steel Magnolias, a popular play of friendship, opens at 7:30 p.m. July 20 at the Springfield Community Players Studio, and will continue on July 21, 27 and 28. The intimate tale of life and death among a small circle of ardent friends in Chinquapin, Louisiana, is directed by Stephanie Rowe. Six distinctly different women gather at Truvys Beauty Parlor for washes and hairdos, share gossip of their community, and banter on love and life. They discuss the medical complications of vibrant bride-to-be Shelby (Aiyana Fortin of Mount Holly), the daughter of harried, down-to-earth MLynn (Kathryn King of Perkinsville). The affable group includes Truvy (Ann Forbusch of Proctorsville), whose personal motto is theres no such thing as natural beauty; Annelle, her somewhat woebegone but eager-to-learn assistant (Anna Kendall of Chester); and a pair of lifelong sparring friends Clairee, the late mayors wife and town matriarch (Irene Ramen of Rockingham), and Ouiser, a crank with a heart of gold (Aprille Lawrence of Springfield). advertisement Dialogue zings with near nonstop one-liners that form the surface of the emotional center of the play, the complex relationship of risk-taking Shelby and her tough-loving mother. Come laugh, maybe cry a little, and bask in the friendship of the six women of Steel Magnolias. Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and students.
