25 year old Stephanie Gibson hopes to be elected to the town Select Board in March. Gibson was born and raised in Springfield. She says she knows first hand the impact of the loss of the machine shops had on the community.
Her father, who also grew up here, was among the hundreds of workers once employed by the Springfield machine tool industry. After high school, Gibson made the decision that this is where she wanted to stay, and now owns a home here.
"I have always had pride in my community. I feel that Springfield once again can be a prosperous town. It will take time and a lot of work, from a lot of people, but I believe it can be done." she said.
"I am running for Select Board because I think it's time for someone my age to step up and take on some responsibilities. I want to encourage others not just my age, but of all ages, to get involved, and ask questions. I would also like to see a more proactive local government. One that looks for potential problems and solutions before they present themselves." she added.
GIbson is currently finishing her Bachelor's Degree through Johnson State College's External Degree Program, with the intent of graduating in May. Currently out of work, she is focusing her time on her academics and campaign, and seeking employment.
