BELLOWS FALLS -- With 2.1 seconds remaining in Tuesday's Senior Night game, two members of the Bellows Falls boys basketball team swarmed around the Springfield player possessing the ball and forced a foul.
All while down 76-46.
It was the sort of tenacity BF coach Evan Chadwick wanted his guys to learn despite the 3-17 record they wound up with after the 30-point loss.
"Hopefully that is going to do them well in things other than the game of basketball -- to never give up. That's an attribute you can't teach," he said after the game. "It comes from within their hearts and they showed a lot of heart."
After the team's three seniors -- Brendan Hackett, Peter Falzo and Luke Brophy -- were recognized with their parents on the court, the 8-11 Cosmos put the first points on the scoreboard before BF tied it up. The Terriers remained even with or just behind Springfield for much of the first quarter until Ethan McAllister drained a 3-pointer with a couple of minutes left. The Cosmos seemed to start to pull away after that and had a 23-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Terriers tried to stay with their archrivals and Falzo's trifecta with 1:10 left in the gloomy first half cut the lead to 38-21.
Several seconds later, Springfield's JT Therrien starting dribbling the ball in place near the perimeter only to have BF's Joe Aslin sneak up from behind him to steal the ball and bring it down the court for an easy layup

to make it 38-23.
The Cosmos scored two more points and went into halftime with a 40-23 advantage.
"They're a tough team. They've got good shooters, obviously," Chadwick said about his team's opponent.
Bellows Falls produced 11 points in the third quarter, including a 3-pointer from Will Bourne. The final frame wasn't much better for the Terriers, as they accumulated 12. Though Bourne displayed a nice pass in the paint to Aslin, who put it up from under the boards in the last couple of minutes.
Drew Guild led the Terries with 10 points while Brophy added eight and Falzo, Aslin and Trevor Wilson all contributed six.
BF's grit did not go unnoticed by Springfield coach Pete Peck.
"They played for 32 minutes and that speaks to where Evan is and where the program is going," he said. "They play a lot of younger kids and they have a future ahead of them."
The Cosmos will host the final game of their regular season on Friday, when they are slated to play Windsor. There is a strong possibility they will make it to the playoffs. Kirk Perham led Springfield with 18 points against the Terriers. Billy Wheeler notched 17 and Aaron Wallace had 14.
Brophy said it was disappointing to lose on Senior Night but that he's already looking forward to playing baseball for Bob Lockerby.
"(Senior Night) definitely gets you more excited -- and sad, because it's your last game," he said before adding that the Terriers got more and more flat as the matchup went on. "We were a little more relaxed, especially toward the end of the first half. But with the way the rest of the season went, it's hard to analyze it and say it's any different."
In addition to his own 12th-graders, Chadwick also wanted to acknowledge Springfield's four seniors -- McAllister, Billy Wheeler, Michael Pianka and Nick Koch -- before the game, as it was also their last one at Holland Gymnasium. He said a Senior Night game is a big deal for anyone.
"It's an emotional day for us. The (seniors) that I've had have been with me since I first came here three years ago and I got to see them grow up. Regardless of what the scoreboard says, it was a special day for the kids and the day is about them," he said.
"It was a trying year," he went on to say. "We've had a lot of adversity that we overcame and we continued to come back and work hard and we didn't end the season like I would have liked but it was still a lot of fun and I was just proud to be a part of it."
The Terriers did not qualify for the playoffs though they did improve from last season's 0-20 record.
