Get to Know Sprinfield
by Kelly Stettner
Spring is springing, or so I insist on deluding myself. As I travel the roads with a van-full of young wrestlers, I look for signs of warmer weather around the corner: cardinals and other songbirds making a ruckus in the trees; bare patches where the rivers and streams are melting; icicles forming as roofs shed their blankets of snow and ice. Some of the other tell-tale signs of spring include the street-sweeper coming around to gather the last of the winter sand and salt from our roads; syrup lines snaking through the woods as the days get warmer; fishing shanties disappearing from the ice at Whites Cove; and the perennial favorite: MUD!
March also happens to be the home of Mardi Gras (hope you wore beads this past Tuesday!), St. Patricks Day (find a recipe for scones, eat some traditional Irish food, or just wear green to lift your spirits), and World Water Day (March 22). Thinking about water, we have so much to be thankful for here in New England, with an abundance of water all around us, from the streams and rivers running through our valleys to the ponds and lakes that offer plenty of scenery and recreation. Celebrate water by conserving it: reserve your spot at the Make-It-Yourself rainbarrel workshop to be held at the Herricks Cove Wildlife Festival on May 1st! For just $35, you can assemble your own rain barrel at the Festival and bring it home to install that very day. All proceeds will benefit the Black River Action Team, supporting the many river activities the group offers throughout the year. Learn more about the BRAT by logging on to www.BlackRiverActionTeam.org and check out the 12th Annual Herricks Cove Wildlife Festival on May 1st, in Rockingham VT. Activities include guided nature walks, arts and crafts, workshops, nature presentations and plenty of local wildlife.
Turn those clocks ahead!
Its time, its time! Saturday night, March 12, turn your clocks and watches ahead for the start of Daylight Saving Time.

Poultry Night
No, its not a chicken barbecue. Erskines Feed Store in Chester, VT is offering an informational evening in partnership with Poulin Grain, all about raising your own poultry. Refreshments will be provided and there are door prizes (possibly a bag of feed, surprise!), but the best part is learning about chickens, geese, ducks and more. Already raising your own? Come get a refresher, take a stab at the door prizes, and offer up some your wisdom to the newbies in the room. This wonderful informational get-together will happen on Thursday, March 31 at 6 p.m. at the Chester Town Hall, at the intersection of Depot St and Elm St in Chester (kitty-corner from Erskines Feed Store).
