WESTMINSTER - The Bellows Falls Union High School boys' basketball team was looking to close out the season with a win on senior night, but the rival Springfield Cosmos had other ideas, building a 13-point lead in the first quarter, then cruising to a 76-46 win over the Terriers at Holland Gym in Westminster.
"For whatever reason, I felt we were very sluggish at the start of the game," Bellows Falls coach Evan Chadwick said after the game. As the Terriers fell behind by 13 points in the first quarter, then spent the rest of the game trying to play catch-up. "They are a well-coached team and have some good athletes, so we had trouble breaking the press early in the game."
The game was tight early on, before Cosmos' senior Ethan Mcallister hit a 3-pointer halfway through the quarter to give Springfield a 12-6 lead. Then, after Bellows Falls junior Drew Guild scored on a lay up to cut the lead back to four, the Cosmos went on an 11-2 run to push the lead to 26-8 lead, triggered by two open jumpers from senior Billy Wheeler.
BF senior Peter Falzo scored inside to break the string, but Springfield had a 23-10 lead at the end of the quarter, clearly out-rebounding the Terriers under the boards and turning it into good transition offense on the other end.
At the start of the second quarter, Springfield extended the lead to 30-10, before a Falzo 3-pointer cut the lead back to 10 halfway through the quarter. However, the Cosmos pushed the lead back to 13 after a free throw and lay up from junior Kirk Perham, forcing BF coach Chadwick to call a time out with just under two minutes left in the half.
Bellows Falls junior Joe Aslin would pick up two quick steals in the final minute which produced a basket and a made free throw, but Springfield junior Aaron Wallace and hit a jumper before Billy Wheeler shot in the paint closed out the quarter and the Cosmos had a 40-23 half time lead.
In the third quarter the Cosmos continued to cause turnovers and get out on the fast-break, getting baskets from Wallace, sophomore JT Therrien and Wheeler to push the lead to 49-23 halfway through the quarter, BF's Guild scored on a nice lay up in the paint to try and stem the tide.
Springfield had a whopping 58-34 lead heading into the final quarter, and continued to control the game on both ends of the floor, however, the Terriers kept working hard, as senior captain Luke Brophy scored on consecutive possessions and junior Will Bourne was diving on the floor after loose balls.
But the Cosmos were just too deep, too strong defensively and too dominating on the boards on this night, cruising to a 76-46 win over the Terriers. "We wanted to put pressure on them defensively early, and then control the tempo of the game, and we accomplished that early on," Springfield coach Pete Peck said after the game. "But I give Bellows Falls credit for playing tough and going hard until the final whistle." Visit Joe Milliken's local sports photo web site at www.jemsportsimages.com.
