BF girls crush Springfield

BELLOWS FALLS -- Craigslist is a place where you can find jobs, apartments, auto parts and even books.
But Craig’s list -- a piece of paper that Bellows Falls girl tennis coach Craig Divis wrote his lineup on before the season opener -- is full of rising stars.
The Terriers swept the singles matches on Monday afternoon and coasted to a 6-1 victory over Springfield.
"This is a huge confidence booster for our girls," said Divis, whose team will next play at Woodstock on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
Playing on adjacent courts, Ruth Rowell and Hillary Willard won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches respectively by the same score, 6-4, 6-4.
Rowell got involved in some long volleys with Daniella Burke, as both players hustled and placed their shots beautifully. Burke often ran her opponent from side to side, while Rowell tried to keep her foe near the baseline with powerful swings.
"She was very consistent with her serve," said Rowell of Burke. "I’m very happy with the way that I played. This is a good start to the season."
Erin Chlebak showed off a strong serve, but Willard continually returned them. She also used some high lobs to throw off Chlebak’s rhythm.
"I was nervous at first. This was my first time at No. 2 singles, so it feels really good to win. My footwork was good...or at least better than usual," stated Willard.
At third singles, Weeze Bennett took care of Springfield’s Kylie Bellows, 6-1, 6-3. Divis said that Bennett served strong, hustled and played a really strong match.
Vanessa Edwards, who had to wait for a court to become available before starting her No. 4 singles match, was too much for Kate McGrotty. Edwards used a solid serve and forehand in her unanimous 6-1, 6-1 decision.
"It was different, because this was my first time playing singles," noted Edwards, who added that she prefers it now over doubles. "I was happy with my serves and my backhands."
Lee Parslow of Bellows Falls won fifth singles by forfeit.
In the marathon match of the day, Remington Kurkul and Tessa Morey teamed up to beat Springfield’s Kelsie Howard and Hannah Sorrell 2-6, 6-4, 7-2 (tiebreaker) at No. 2 doubles.
In the tiebreaker, Morey came up big by putting away a return, placing another shot into the deep corner and blasting a forehand. "Remi" chipped in by lobbing one just inside the baseline and then scoring the seventh point on an overhand at the net.
Kianna Nelson and Jaymee Jones picked up Springfield’s lone victory, as they defeated Bridget Johnson and Emma Moyna 6-0, 6-0 at first doubles.
"Johnson and Moyna are two freshmen that never played before. They gained a lot of experience and they are promising players," said Divis.
