Downtown brawl

Springfield police officers responded to multiple calls of a 25-person fight on Main Street at 11 pm Friday evening August 5th.

As officers responded into the scene most of the subjects involved, were fleeing the area. Those that remained in the area upon arrival of officers were interviewed and then advised to leave the area and not to return. Due to there being no witnessed acts of disorderly conduct by police; no victims were willing to step forward; and no witnesses were willing to provide statements, no arrests were made.

Surrounding law enforcement agencies were contacted initially to assist due to number of people reportedly involved. At the time of the incident Springfield had 4 officers on duty.

  3. A bar next door to a movie theater isn't the best location.

  4. I'd like to know why they can't enforce the speed limit along Clinton Street. Drivers go like hell on that stretch of road, right in front of the police station, where it's posted 35. If you can't catch 'em in your own front yard...

  5. Just wanna repeat what other posts have said...."Lots of good things are happening in Springfield"

REALLY?? Another example of the out of control environment and community! I notice that no word was mentioned that the theater was full of children who had to have police escorts out to their parents during all this.

  7. So - judging by the idiot's comment above in all caps, he expects the entire dept. to arrive in a snap of a finger and throw a net out over the crowd? As far as Clinton Street commenter goes - are you nuts? There is a nary a day that I drive through there and someone isn't pulled over. And the person stopped is probably whining that they are out there too much, while you sit at home whining they aren't out there enough. It's all about balance Mr. Genius.

  8. Not to hijack this thread, but the above post is correct. Driving Clinton street is running a gauntlet. Traffic control is overwhelming, even at 5:30 AM when people are commuting to work. Such casts a very negative image on Springfield as it's viewed as a speed trap for anyone entering town. Not exactly a welcoming, first impression. I have personally endured having associates refuse to do business in Springfield after their treatment by a cop in hiding. The infraction could have as easily been resolved by a warning. I have attended selectboard meetings to repeatedly see the same parade of do-gooders hounding the town for increased services. Time to take off the gloves and challenge these dolts in public. Most of whom pay no local taxes.

  9. To the last two posters, how dare you insult ME. I am a home-owning, hard-working, tax- paying, life-long citizen of this town. I am scared to death everytime I ride my bike from my home to the bike path and back when I am on Clinton Street, going by the old shops. The cars fly so fast through that section of town that I only dare to ride on the sidewalk. I travel at the speed limit and never over. I am in favor of anyone speeding getting caught, and fined. It just seems to me that the Springfield Police could do a better job of enforcing the speed limit right in front of their building. Charlestown has a sign that flashes your speed as you enter town. Perhaps Springfield could do the same as soon as the road changes from 50 down to 40 and then 35. Oh and by the way, while you were up playing on your computer at 1:30 in the morning, I was sound asleep, readying myself for another day at work.

  11. LOL. Insult? How is it possible to insult an anonymous poster? IDIOT. So what do you want...a cop to sit in front of the police station 24/7 writing tickets? Newsflash - people speed....everywhere.....on all streets - and a cop can't be everywhere at once. I ride my bike down Clinton Street nearly everyday - I haven't seemed to notice anything out of the ordinary - although, I have seen some trembling whiner riding his bike on the sidewalk right in front of the police station. Hard to believe they aren't running out of the building and citing said biker; maybe they should. And oh great - nice try on the "I work and you don't" bit. Ever heard of SHIFTS, Mr/Mrs. Posting at 1:15 pm? Some job.

  12. The Springfield Police do a good job. They took down murderers from Brattleboro a couple of weeks ago in town, nobody complimented their efforts for putting their lives on the line for that. For every couple of minutes they spend outside of a cruiser they have to spend triple the time writing paperwork. There are more drug overdoses and drug related crime and drug related thefts in springfield than fatal traffic accidents. Leave the police alone when it comes to silly speeding complaints, they have more important issues to deal with. And, if a bunch of drunken fools want to beat each other up, let them have at it. If the bar is a problem, complain to the town to have the liquor license revoked.

  13. I wouldn't say they "took down" anyone. They responded to an APB on the vehicle and knowing the connection to Springfield, they looked in the usual places. That is their job. Yes, they arrested them, but let's also remember that the SPD were not the original agency that arrested the dealers to begin with, they were not even the originating agency. So to say that they do a good job...well that is a stretch. If they were on top of it they would have been the ones who investigated and arrested the dealers to begin with, not assist the State drug agency. But I will say they are at least out there. Even if it is minute. Better than nothing.

  14. I'm an IDIOT? I'll just consider the source. Ever heard of work breaks? I can tell by your postings that you are one ugly, angry person. Please get some help.

  15. "I'm an IDIOT?" Yes - for the third time, you are. Care to go for a fourth?

  16. BACK TO THE POINT!
the daytime parking ticket officer should be replaced with a night time beat cop.
ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT both more business and less crime downtown. Duh. Ohhh?, NUTS!!!

  17. There has been one since at least the fifties. During the late evening hours, an officer assigned to the middle section of town does a foot patrol and checks each business to make sure it is locked. They usually park in one of the back parking lots. I hear them on the scanner all the time reporting an open door and if they don't have a key to lock it, they call the business owner in.
