Springfield weather updates

Rains seemed to come to an abrupt end once the eye of the storm passed by and to the north of us, around 6:30 pm. The rains were replaced by gusty winds which within an hour brought on power outages to many area residents. Winds finally began to calm down as midnight approached.

First tree casualty in town:  This old apple tree in North Springfield came down at about 10:15 this morning while winds were still a mild breeze.  The soil had apparently become too saturated for the root system to maintain its solid andhoring. The small shed the tree came to rest on was left tilted off its foundation.

It was a very rainy overnight and early morning in Springfield, more than two inches of rain had fallen by 8:00 a.m.. Winds were more or less calm until 9:30 a.m. when a mild steady breeze started.

At 6:30 pm, the wind suddenly started to pick up just as a patch of blue sky appeared on the western horizon. Wind somewhat gusty at times but rain has stopped and sun is peeking through the clouds. Noticeably cooler out.
