An early morning fire has destroyed an apartment complex in Springfield, displacing at least a dozen tenants.
Fire fighters spent more than two hours battling the blaze at the Waterford Village apartments on Vermont 106. Twelve of the 15 long-term rental units were occupied at the time of the fire, according to Springfield Deputy Fire Chief Scott Richardson. No one was injured, he said.
Richardson said his department responded to the fire at about 2:10 a.m. today, and with the help of several other departments, knocked down the flames by 4:30 a.m. The building is a total loss, and state fire investigators are coming into town to try and determine the fires origin, he said.
The Vermont and the New Hampshire Valley American Red Cross responded to the blaze as well, to feed and hydrate fire fighters and provide services for displaced tenants. The agency opened a center for tenants and their families at the Springfield Community Center on Main Street.
Fire fighters from Bellows Falls, Chester, Ludlow, Reading, Weathersfield and Charlestown, N.H., assisted the Springfield Fire Department.
