Vt mental health patients held in prison

Every inmate at the Southern State Correctional facility in Springfield is charged with a crime, was brought here in a jumpsuit and now sleeps in a jail cell. But five of them aren't prisoners. They're patients.

  1. This is unconstitutional! Since when does having a mental illness make a person a criminal? I thought our society had moved past the cruel and unusual treatment of mental health patients. I guess our Mental Health Commissioner didn't get the memo.

  4. Doesn't HCRS have a place for them to stay? I know that there are people housing some mentally challenged individuals in their house.
I also know they have multiple places in the community there was one on Lincoln Street, multiple places in BF and I'm sure the rest of the state has places. Our tax dollars are paying for it.

    5. Folks should do more research before commenting, yes you are entitled to your own opinion, but dangerous/and/or unstable mental health patients cannot be placed in a house on Elm Hill which is not a locked facility. These individuals were in a Locked State mental hospital before the flood. Patients of this nature are a flight risk and need to be in a locked environment for both their and others safety. If you want to blame someone, blame the government for not making it a priority to build a replacement facility sooner, not your local agencies that do not have that power. Think before you post!
