Rice captures D-II golf title

WATERBURY – This year, even golf titles have to go through Rice.
The school storied for its basketball programs grabbed up its first golf championship on Wednesday, and having the medalist helped out in more ways than one.
Senior Caleb Connerty fired par 72 at the Country Club of Vermont and the Green Knights posted 327 to beat runner-up Lyndon’s 343 in Division II.
In addition to posting his best-ever competitive round, Connerty schooled his teammates as a former member of the course. He once shot 72 from the black tees, some 900 yards longer than the whites the teams played in the state finals.
“I just played it one shot at a time and tried to think about anything but the score,” Connerty said.
“I knew (Caleb) was capable of it but I definitely was surprised with the way he focused,” said coach Father Dallas St. Peter, the coach for the last three years.
Springfield was third at 357, followed by Woodstock (361), Montpelier (385) and Harwood (389).
Connerty, who up until two years ago played lacrosse, was 1over on the front and 1 under on the back, the latter with an eagle on the 15th. He smacked a 4-iron from 220 yards into the green and made his 8-foot putt.
Rice, which was never able to break through in Division II, got an encouraging victory early in the season at the Newport Invitational.
“Once we started competing I realized we had a decent shot,” St. Peter said.
No. 1 Sam Meyers was second for Rice with 78, Brendan Thompson shot 96 and Harrison Thayer 81.
“This was a team victory,” Connerty said. “Our back players really worked to get better.”
Springfield’s Alex Rumrill, the sections medalist at Rutland, shot 76 to lead Springfield. Mill River independent Johann Russell shot 78 and a solo from Mount Abraham, Carson Sanchez, had 75.
Tom Connor shot 90 for Montpelier and Jarek Hammerl had 87 for Harwood.
